Whenever there is compromise in a negotiation, whether early or late, it's because the two sides have enough latitude to make those compromises.
So, what latitude is there for last minute compromise in Brexit?

If you had agreed the nature of the border in Ireland early on, you could sort out the fiddly bits of detail at the end.

The Tories were trying to use Article 50 to scam a new exclusive form of membership. But instead of allowing that, Europe says you've given notice, you have to leave. No new treaty.
But that means imposing a new border somewhere. Theresa May - rather foolishly - thought she could skip that part.

The whole misunderstand about the Irish border is that Theresa May thinks it's a question of how to operate it, but it's not, it's just a question of where you want it.
The problem is not what kind of border you have but where it's going.
