*taps internet mic* Hello? Hello? I would like to submit a request to the twitterverse for someone to create an Octavia Butler themed tarot deck. Artists & nerds, please commence your magic.
It wouldn’t have to be traditional tarot. It could just be wisdom, lessons, & warnings from her books on cards to pull. Internet, please tell me one of you is already thinking about this. #tarot #OctaviaEButler #scifi
Maybe all I really need is a deck of cards where every card says “Everything You Touch, You Change. Everything You Change, Changes You”

Woke up to a Google alert about this new review of #BodymindsReimagined in American Literary History by Rebecca Wanzo (@rawreader) & I am just so honored & amazed.

I’ll share my favorite quotes below! Happy to send folks a copy who don’t have access!

“Schalk offers the most paradigm-shifting challenge to what is speakable and unspeakable: the problem of linking blackness with disability and how to reframe our treatment of these categories”

😳😲🤯
“The issue of pleasure is one of the most radical interventions of the book, thus modeling a new ideal of what the nexus of race and the speculative genre can do.” (And shout out to @adriennemaree, @WalidahImarisha & @OctaviasBrood) #pleasureactivism

It’s #Monday, I’m boozing it up at a 4 seat bar, the #barkeep is a long pourer, and I’m all fucking set if I get something stuck between my teeth.👇🙃 #RandomThoughts #drinking #OutAndAbout
Shooting the shit with a friend, she’s proud to be doing well with her plants - unusual for her.

The key was a #video explaining the benefits of pruning.

She needs REASONS. She got them.

Apparently, pruning in a particular manner stimulates growth hormones.

Of course, this led to me initiating a discussion about the #movie I just watched on Hulu, called “The German Doctor.”

The main character was Josef Mengele. #ThisHappened

People, this is why I’m known in my circles as “The Black Hole Of Conversation.” SMTH

The woman stared at the lights emblazoned on the building. It was just a name, but somehow it wasn't fair a building could have a name and she didn't. But then, she thought a lot of things weren't fair.

Smoke wafted from the cigarette, creating a pale wisp of white in the dark night. She exhaled, dispersing the wisp in a balloon of gray. Again, she tried to think back, to remember the day before. And again, there was nothing.

Carlo had told her that there was no record of her, that her DNA was not in the planetary registry, nor fingerprints or photos or anything else. For all intents and purposes, she really didn't exist. She was a non-person, a ghost.

I have a particular love for dark and gritty art with rough strokes. Ivan Khotenov's Sk_15 fits that perfectly. artstation.com/artwork/L2Zwbw

Over Talis' shoulder, the storm spanned the horizon. Thick, dark clouds of sand reached up to blot the searing sun from the sky. This wall of death stretched up more than a mile. Her death, if she didn't get out of the Razorsand Sea.

Jefa's dying screams echoed in her head, even as she gunned the runnerbike and took off. On Toxous' order, she'd been fed to an acidworm for some perceived slight on his part. Seeing her lover's flesh disolve made Talis want to vomit.

The creak echoed through the clearing as Private Tull shoved open the engine access hatch. A blast of steam washed over him and he cursed. The hydrocapacitor was shot. That meant that runner wasn't going anywhere until he fixed it.

"Whassa matter, Private NULL? That big-ass head ain't got enough brains t'fix a little runner?" Corporal Daught strolled by chuckling, an armload of comm-cable in hand. Tull bit his tongue to keep from spitting back a snarky comment.

Bow in hand, Dav and his brother Shen tracked the deer trail through the fresh snow. The forest peeled back, revealing a frozen lake. A quarter-league away, a metal circle taller than a man stood on end at the water's edge.

Just then, a young doe stepped out of the trees near the ring to approach the waterline.

I have cited AO3's taxonomy and archiving systems as models at academic linguistics conferences because they are IMPRESSIVE as usable, durable, well-designed systems, and frankly academia could stand to learn from fandom here
Here's an example: rights transfer and orphaning

Academic archives are patchy when the original depositor of the data dies or doesn't want to be responsible for it anymore. AO3 has a whole system in place to transfer fic to another user or leave it up without your name attached
I was literally at a conference a few years ago when an academic was like "oh yeah we just don't know how to deal with rights transfer at our archive" and I pulled up AO3's orphaning policy as a model

Last year, I did a questionnaire focusing on Black women and science fiction. I haven't written much on it, and I couldn't figure out why until today. Today, I walk back and share the comments. #reclaimingmytime #phdchat #AcademicTwitter #blerd
Most of the responses were soooo valuable, and I know that #Blackgirlnerds are everywhere across the globe based on the 300+ responses that I received. But... there were a couple that I couldn't deal with at the time.
To keep these together, I'll use #NerdingWhileBlack ... I think it's appropriate when I think about all the times that people have been amazed that I read sci-fi and fantasy and watch anime consistently. I also think it fits since being a #nerd has often been raced as White.

In the mainland, it was safer to marry the kids to each other. They would live with their assigned parents according to the fake identity genealogy. What used to be known as the #cycle of abuse had been normalized. They had to blend in and hide in plain sight. #vss365 #AmWriting

Great tools on character relationships in this episode of @WritingExcuses.
From @howardtayler: 2 examples of power in character relationships are Personal Power and Position Power. Personal Pwr comes from charisma and social worth within the group. Position Power comes from the hierarchical structure of the organization. #writing #scifi
Inteteresting conflict arises when a character believes their Personal Pwr grants them Positional Pwr (the popular guy who acts like the boss). Or when a character believes their Positional Pwr grants them Personal Pwr (the boss that thinks she's everyone's friend) #writingadvice

Here's a guaranteed way for #Writing Contest Jurors to ruin an #emergingwriter's day: tweet to your followers (some of whom have to be thinking of entering the contest you're judging) that you're not a fan of certain kinds of stories, so maybe it's best if they "skip this one..."
...bc being an #emergingwriter isn't hard enough. It isn't hard enough that there already is a magical/frustrating subjectiveness and unpredictability to contests, and that entering one is an act of #faith, yet maybe your surprising story will be the one to enchant the jurors...
...nor is it a challenge to come up with the contest fee, which is usually significant, because you think your story's great and might have a shot, even though it's got #scifi or #specfic elements, because you've been inspired in the past by unexpected and genre-bending work...

I've been part of the Twitter resistance for a year now. I'm going to share some thoughts about why & how I resist.

Some people may not like some things I say here. I’m sorry for that, but they need to be said. 1 #WhyIResist #HowIResist #RebelScum #TheResistance
Some things in the first year were fun: meeting like-minded people, the #scifi characters, learning how to take effective action. Celebrating #victories like beating the #ACA repeal bills.

A lot of it wasn't fun - the threats of nuclear war, the daily stress of bad news. 2
Follow parties were fun, and a good way to promote a message and raise awareness, connect with other resistors and grow our followings. They had themes and served a purpose and there was about about one a month.  3 #PartyWithAPurpose #trending #amplify #effective
