If you’re in the mood to be empowered, here’s a thread with some of our favorite films with a strong female lead on Netflix right now. You’re welcome:
Queen of Katwe – This was directed by Mira Nair and is based on the true story of Phiona Mutes, a Ugandan girl who discovered she had knack for chess. According @Wired, when @Lupita_Nyongo first read the script she “got ten pages in and had to put it down… I was weeping.”
Frances Ha – This film shows how close female friendships evolve as you grow up and grow apart. The dialogue is witty and original and Greta Gerwig is, as always, a national treasure.
To The Bone – You know a film about an eating disorder is going to be harrowing, but the gift of To The Bone is it’s also infused with moments of humor and empathy that take it so much further. The film is based on the real life experiences of writer/director, @martinoxon.
Girlhood – *Ahem* Boyhood is great, but don’t sleep on Girlhood. This film follows Marieme as she navigates growing up and finding her place in the world. (And it’s so beautifully shot.)
Big Eyes – Amy Adams plays Margaret Hawkins, an artist whose husband, Walter Keane, took credit for her artwork. Big *eye roll* to him.
Iris – If you don’t know who fashion legend Iris Apfel is… buckle UP. This doc gives a glimpse into the life of one of fashion’s most influential women, and shows what it truly means to be an individual.
Tallulah – Allison Janney and Ellen Page play an unlikely team after Page’s character takes a baby from a neglectful mother and asks her ex boyfriend’s mother (Janney) for help. I mean… it’s Allison Janney and Ellen Page.
Boys On The Side –
Whoopi Goldberg as a lesbian lounge singer ✅
Drew Barrymore as a pregnant woman on the run ✅
Mary-Louise Parker as a real estate agent with a secret ✅
All together on a life changing road trip?!! ✅✅✅
Carol – How do I even sum up the beauty that is Carol? It’s got romance, intrigue, Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson, and did I mention Cate Blanchett??
The Babadook – If you want a horror movie without the damsel in distress trope, this film follows a woman as she battles her own inner demons.
She’s Gotta Have It – This was Spike Lee’s first major feature and it was revamped as a television show in 2017. The film follows Nola as she balances the affections of three different men. It was revolutionary for the time.
Tangerine – Tangerine has humor, heart, and follows a sex worker after she discovers her boyfriend has cheated on her. (And it was all shot on a cell phone! Thanks @Lilfilm).
Amélie – Sign me up for any movie where a quirky, quiet girl in Paris is the hero. Warning: Watching this movie may result in asking your hairdresser for a bob.
Seeing Allred – Want to know what life is like for one of America’s most famous female rights lawyers? Seeing Allred gives a behind-the-scenes glimpse into @GloriaAllred’s life.
And finally, Cruel Intentions – It has the holy trinity of badass women: @SarahMGellar @SelmaBlair @RWitherspoon. If you’ve seen it, rewatch it. If you haven’t – prepare yourself.
