Nothing's worse than going home for the holidays, picking a film to watch with the family, & then realizing there's a 15-minute sex scene in it. Do you look away? Blurt out you’re a virgin? The options aren’t great.

So, I made this list of non-awkward films to watch while home.
Julie & Julia – This is such a warm and fun film to watch (and it’s actually based on a true story). If the premise alone doesn’t pull you in, Meryl Streep’s uncanny ability to inhabit the spirit of Julia Child should.
Two Weeks Notice – If you’re looking for a rom-com to dig into, this is a good one. Not only is it PG-13, but it features Sandra Bullock in my favorite type of Sandra Bullock role: One where she doesn’t take shit from anyone.
Coco – If you’ve got little ones at home but want the adults to be engaged as well, give Coco a shot. This film not only made me sob, but it has valuable lessons about family and compassion trickled throughout.
Cargo – If your family is into zombie thrillers but you don’t want anything too gratuitous, check out Cargo. This film is such a lovely story about fatherhood, chosen family, and it truly provides a fresh take on the post-apocalypse genre.
Feminists: What Were They Thinking? – If you’re ready to get a political conversation around the dinner table going, precursor your meal by watching this documentary. It outlines the history of the feminist movement, how far we’ve come, and how far we still have to go.
Doctor Strange – There’s nothing I love more than Benedict Cumberbatch playing a witty, but slightly awkward hero. Doctor Strange is a great balance of action, adventure, and comedy, so it’ll please even the pickiest of viewers.
The Princess Diaries – I’ve watched this film at least 14 times, and it still doesn’t feel like enough. Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews have such great comedic chemistry together it’ll make you smile no matter how many times you’ve seen it.
Nappily Ever After – While they *allude* to sexy stuff in this film, there’s nothing graphic that will make you blush too much. Plus, the larger message of this film is about self-love, and finding your own confidence from within.
Black Panther – A shirtless Michael B. Jordan might make your nana feel some type of way, but the sexiness in this film is subtle enough that you won’t be making pretend trips to the bathroom to avoid the awkwardness. If you’ve seen it, rewatch it. If you haven’t, get on it.
So if you’re home for the holidays this week and need a break from, well, talking to your slightly problematic uncle. Please defer to the list above, and if you want to – tweet @ me on this thread with photos of you and your family watching!
