Rep. John Lewis at the RFK Human Rights Award ceremony: "All of you young people, when you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have a moral obligation to stand up, speak up. Find a way to get in the way, to get in trouble, good trouble, necessary trouble."
Those in attendance include @Emma4Change, @davidhogg111, @DoloresHuerta and many more human rights leaders and activists.
"We will set the Dreamers free," Rep. John Lewis says. "It doesn’t make sense, hundreds of thousands of young people came here as children, as babies, living in fear. If we fail to [pass immigration reform], history will not be kind to us as a people, as a nation."
"We often focus on the rights aspect of human rights," @arishamichelle says, accepting the award for @ColorOfChange. "In this moment, more than ever, we need to amplify the human part of human rights."
"You brought us here, you're going to take your photographs," says member of @iiycfamily. "Horrible things have been happening to us and as leaders, as adults, it is your responsibility to clean up the messes you made. Don't depend on children to do [what] you should be doing."
"Indigenous youth and black youth will lead this fight because our existence is our resistance," @iiycfamily says. "By us ... being here, by us speaking our language, by us wearing our regalia, we are resisting a system that was built on the backs of black and brown youth."
"On June 2, 1924, 94 years ago, the United States granted indigenous people American citizenship," @iiycfamily says. "We just wanted to say thank you for doing that and welcome to our country." The statement is met with cheers.
"We can’t let the terrible system in which we were raised, beat us," @cameron_kasky of Parkland, Fla. and March For Our Lives says. "We are all more powerful than any political system as long as we stand together and demand more from it."
"When discussing immigration policy, Donald Trump said, 'These aren’t people. These are animals,'" member of @UNITEDWEDREAM says. "This racist language is disgusting. ... [and] has been used from generation to generation to criminalize, arrest and kill people of color."
Another @UNITEDWEDREAM member leads the room in a chant: "My mother is somebody and she deserves full equality. Right here, right now. My father is somebody. He deserves full equality. Right here, right now. I am somebody and I deserve full equality. Right here, right now."
