Elsa Ortiz was sobbing heavily as she climbe the steps to the plane that was taking her and other deportees to Guatemala. Without her son. “Please don’t put me on the plane,” she pleaded. “I can’t go without my son.”
“I was shaking, I could barely walk,” recalled the distraught mother of 8-year-old Anthony. But nobody listened.
Anthony was taken by US authorities a day after the border patrol encountered them. He was sent to a shelter. She was removed before she could find him.
All Ms Ortiz knows now is that he is in a facility in Texas. She has no idea when she will see him again. Reunion is complicated because kids and parents are on separate legal tracks once apart.
Anthony and his mom spoke. He has no idea that she is back in Guatemala, and she dreads how he will react when he finds out.
