August 2000 profile of @pmarca does something that almost no tech journalism ever does. It dwells on failures and lessons from his Netscape experience. wired.com/2000/08/loudcl… (1/2) #wiredarchive
This runs counter to a pattern I’ve seen in the magazine. They cover the buildup of new tech. They cover the peak of new tech. But they rarely cover the fall or the aftermath.

(That’s not a critique of @WIRED, btw. It’s true for all tech journalism and academic case studies)
...I noticed this point last night, reading volume 21 (2013). After a couple years covering Groupon and Zynga as those companies set records, in 2013 there are a pair of comedic references in the “statgeist” Venn diagrams section, noting how each has shed revenue.
It makes intuitive sense why this pattern emerges. Companies are eager to talk to journalists during their buildup and at their peak. Not so excited to do so during the fall or the aftermath. And both editors and readers are more interested in the Next Big Thing than (...)
...In sober reflection on what preconceived notions of The Future ought to be reconsidered based on how things actually turned out.
(So, in summary... of the many Marc Andreessen profiles in @WIRED, I think the 2000 interview is my favorite. It's a bit of a genre-breaker. Very cool.)
