I’m afraid the November election will be hacked, directly, through the voting machines/databases.
Im afraid it won’t be terribly subtle.
I’m afraid the outrage will be confined to the usual suspects, and that will functionally be how US democracy ends.
Four years ago, I would have thought it unfathomable.
And, reading Kim Zetter’s NYT piece on election security, it sure seems like we’ve failed to take the basic steps to prevent it.

Let’s say there’s then a detailed investigation from a panel of expert evaluators.
Let’s say they conclude with near certainty that there was vote tampering.
What then?
How have the Trump administration and congressional allies responded to this fire expert warning?
Deny, undermine, and change the subject.
Jake Tapper would ask tough questions in an interview; the news clip going viral for a day or so.
Progressive advocacy groups would stage mass protests. That’s one more news cycle.
But then what?
I’d still go to work on Monday. You would too. I’d have papers to grade and articles to peer review.
Those of us facing the brunt of systemic injustice would still be facing it.
Those of us with privilege would still marinate in our privilege.
Democrats would declare that they’ll make it an issue in the next election.
Left critics would call the democrats out for being spineless.
How many months would it take before we all start focusing on 2020?
I’m not saying it’s *likely* the elections will be hacked.
But it’s possible. And I’m afraid of it. And I’m pretty sure of the farce that would follow.
Democracy is fragile; Our government has gotten careless and clumsy.
