I've never been super in to colorful fabrics, but it was swatches on swatches on swatches today...

Happy Saturday! Cleaning the chicken coop, then doing some writing today. Last week, a 10th grader checked out Diary of a Wimpy Kid because that's the last book he remembered reading. Another student (who wasn't checking anything out) tried to clown him about it.
We got over that, but I'm noticing more and more the power students have over eachother (with regard to reading culture).
I know we think (and talk, and write) about the fact that telling Ss they aren't reading "at level", then giving them something to read that's "rigorous" and perhaps inaccessible, then evaluating/judging them on their ability to perform a tasks isn't the best formula.

Lately, I've been talking with @nenagerman and others about the role of the anti- racist educator in spaces serving predominantly white children vs. spaces with children of color.
Some thoughts: systems and structures predominantly serving children of color are often environments that perpetuate narratives of subordination and white suburban supremacy.

first public comment here at the cville school board meeting asks the board to ban confederate symbols in schools. they are implicit threats of violence. “these symbols send one message to black and brown people: you are not welcome here.”
he asks the city school board to “take a leadership role” on the issue — subtly hinting at the failure of albemarle county schools to take this step.
the second public commenter is a high school student speaking in behalf of the black student union. they support the dress code change to ban confederate symbols. “as a student at charlottesville high school, i really don’t want to see these symbols in my school.”

it is a busy day here in charlottesville! after ramos’ sentencing, there’s an albemarle county school board meeting. residents, parents, and activists are asking the school board to ban hate symbols, like the confederate flag, in county schools.
the albemarle county school board meeting is, inexplicably, being held in a very small conference room down the hall from the auditorium it’s been in every other time i’ve ever attended. the room is at capacity, with people standing, lining the walls.
members of the hate-free schools coalition of albemarle county are joined tonight by the hate-free schools coalition of orange county, nc.
after the events here last august, orange county, nc schools successfully banned hate symbols from their schools!

At the Newport News City Council work session, things have become interesting about city funding to the school division. Budget Director Lisa Cipriano presented this chart, based on what she says are school figures, since 2008.
Both Cipriano and City Manager Cindy Rohlf said there have been charts presented by school officials and being circulated on social media that misrepresent funding.
One of those charts is apparently this one. Most of that shows the city’s funding for debt payments + operations. But that last bar doesn’t account for debt. Not a level comparison, but was presented to the public at some point (I think during a School Board meeting)
