UPDATED: I got the South Africa variant of #COVID19 in #Ottawa and based on public health's response, we are in BIG trouble. @OttawaHealth @COVID19Ontario A thread:
For context, I live alone and see 1 person who also lives alone. We only go out for essentials. On Mon. March 8, I get some gastro symptoms, that then go away and don't reappear. I have IBS, so no biggie. On Tues. March 9, my close contact gets headache and flu symptoms. 2/
His symptoms worsen, so we both get tested Sat. March 13. I have no symptoms (including gastro)from March 9 - March 13 in the morning. By Sunday night, I'm sick and we get our positive tests back. That's when @OttawaHealth steps in and it gets confusing… 3/

Xue Xu says pronouns and phonetic pronunciation to be added to delegations.
We missed some of Xue Xu's delegation but here are some highlights:

"Myself and others heard again and again, that students, especially gender minorities, racialized and disabled people, are having stressful, even traumatic interactions because of special constables."
"I myself, too, was falsely arrested by special constables as a student on my previous campus, my charges later dropped, a situation that was terrifying for me as someone with a disability that means I cannot reliably control what I say." said Xu

Good morning. I chose not to give up my Saturday yesterday to go into a retirement home to immunize. It was disorganized (again). We were asked last minute, exhausted. Family docs are fed up. Time to disabuse the public of the notion that we are part of #COVIDVaccine plans. 🧵
In #Ottawa, @OttawaHealth told us they still have nobody appointed as the lead for #CovidVaccine rollout. They are tired, doing this off the sides of their desks. They say it is a nightmare, but they’ve gotten no supports from Ontario. They are at the mercy of provincial whims...
Ottawa tell us that we *may* get to put our names into a lottery to work at mass vaccine clinics, but we won’t get to immunize our own patients. They tell us we can’t help register our patients. Then Ontario announced that family docs are supposed to help 80+ register online...

This is what a proper detour looks like for #ActiveTransportation.

Notice the #accessibility ramp, helpful signage, the detour is direct and logical, priority given to people over cars.

All too often in #Ottawa, sidewalks and cycleways are just marked "closed" forcing people onto roads with fast moving cars.

Alternatively, they are forced to cross the road with no priority crossing or confusing detour is set up that adds several city blocks to a 🚴‍♂️🧍♿ trip.
Yesterday, this sidewalk was blocked as 100's of kids in 3 area schools were trying to pass through this area. Car and truck traffic still had full use of the road though.

Today marks exactly one year since @ottawacity declared a housing emergency so let's the actions #Ottawa City Council has taken so far (a thread) 1/6:
Instead of putting the necessary funding they need for housing they put 25x more money towards the @OttawaPolice 25x than building new affordable homes. 2/6
Despite having very limited affordable housing supply, they voted to build the new Barrhaven LRT through a working-class neighbourhood 3/6

I have an emergency that I would like my Twitter Family's #Help with.

I am worried about my friend Jenn and her co workers that run @HarvestHillsYYC.

They have run themselves ragged and need help.

There's a reason why Jenn and the team have not posted or shared a lot lately on their social media accounts.

She is probably going to kill me for doing this (RIP @Hell_Berta)......but I need to do something for them. I can't sit back and watch them burn themselves out.
As everyone knows, Jenn was in a car accident in Dec. and she was hurt pretty bad. I am talking grade 3 concussion bad and really really bad whiplash and other injuries.

She is at home recovering and her fellow board members and dedicated volunteers have picked up and helped.

This evening at 4:45pm we got a call from a social worker that works with seniors. She called us in a frenzy asking us for immediate help.

She told us of an emergency so extreme that her voice shook with concern over one of her clients.

#YYC #Calgary #CalgarySeniors #hope
This is what she said:

"Hello Jen, I was hoping I would be able to contact you before I left my work for the day in regards to a rather important situation that came across my desk this afternoon. I hope you have the time to chat?"

I said "Yes of course, how can we help?" #care
She said "We have a senior lady that is struggling so much that she has been going door to door asking for food from others in her complex."

I was quiet and honestly speechless.

I said "Of course we can and we will help. What is it that you need." #FEEDYYC #FoodHamper #helping

**Help IS Desperately NEEDED** **Emergency HELP**

This is very hard for us to write. But we feel we have no other choice due to us seeing the massive amount of requests that we are getting daily for both Humans and Pets.

Here is what has happened as of late:
This past weekend alone, we had over 30 emergency requests from individuals & families fleeing domestic violence. Many leaving with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

We were able to help about 17 of these individuals find shelter and lodging via referrals to other groups.
The other 13 individuals are being helped by our awesome volunteers. We are tracking down emergency funding and helping them apply for help through various organizations here in #Calgary.

We will be assisting them and their families in hopes of helping them feel safe once again.

(1/48) Why daily #COVID19 case counts are not the most relevant number and what #Ontario should be paying attention to instead. Mega-thread below. 👇🧵🚨
(2/48) Let’s begin by recapping what daily reported case counts are supposed to represent. When we look at them, we get a picture of what the epidemic looked like 1–2 weeks ago, so any change in the trajectory of the epidemic will take some time to show up in the daily counts.
(3/48) Why? Because it takes ~5 days from time of infection to begin showing symptoms, and then further days to seek testing, get tested, and finally process the test and report the results. This lag is affected by a number of factors, such as the size of the testing backlog.

On the Brink: Niagara Falls a Metaphor for Abrupt Climate Change

#ClimateChange #ClimateAction #ClimateEmergency #climate #climatestrike #GlobalWarming #weather #USA #Canada #ottawa
Standing on the brink of Niagara Falls is a perfectly apt metaphor for abrupt climate change. At this point in time, humanity is teetering on the brink of the cliff, and is poised to plunge over the Falls without even a rudimentary barrel...
The power of nature comes into focus when one is next to the brink, and our mind imagines the fear we would feel if we were a few yards away from our location on the observation lookout and in the river instead, being swept along by the swift water...

🚨 #Ontario made the call today to re-implement modified stage 2 restrictions in #Ottawa, #Toronto, and #Peel due to the resurgence in #COVID19 cases and hospitalizations. 📈

(1/20) Some thoughts on where COVID-19 is going in the province. Thread.🧵⬇️
(2/20) This should not be a surprise to anyone. It has been apparent that COVID-19 is once again on an exponential trajectory in Ontario for at least several weeks.

(3/20) A confluence of recent events—the testing backlog, the transition to appointment-based testing, the suspension of contact tracing—have made daily case numbers in the province less reliable, especially in hard-hit areas like Toronto.
