So, in Johnson's view and in the eyes of May, and the remainder of her cabinet - the December declaration was nothing more than an artificial confection agreed to for the benefit of moving to the political declaration part of A50 regarding the future relationship. ➡️
Or, and this always has to be a consideration with Johnson, he's lying his considerable ass off and he knew exactly what the December Joint Report was and is only changing his position now for his traditional reasons of his own personal advancement in the Conservative Party. ➡️
Neither is a particularly edifying prospect: Either the UK's current head of government is a sociopathic liar or everybody else in the upper echelons of the current ruling party that aspires to the job is a sociopathic liar. ⏹️

The Leavers have spent the last 30+ months saying that the EU's Single Market, Customs Union and Common Commercial Policy effectively hold back British competitiveness and innovation.➡️
So the EU are saying "Off you trot, put your money where your mouth is; but - just so you're aware - please don't expect us to act as your safety net or to allow you to compromise the standards that we have established. Out of the EU means out of the SM". ➡️

I have long argued that EU-UK foreign and defence cooperation should be a “win-win” area, even naively hoping that a quick succesful resolution might encourage a more positive negotiating atmosphere generally. This was my take for @CSS_Zurich in March 2017 css.ethz.ch/content/dam/et…
Why has it not panned out like this? I think there are a few reasons. In general, on EU side, seems to be growing distrust of UK postions, because of muddled way HMG has handled the negotiations. Specifically on defence, I also wonder if UK over-estimated strength of this card.
