Man, Speedy had *bunnies.* He lived in my dorm freshman year and was about 5’ 10, but was finishing oops and putbacks in game. 😲 Had a nice,long career — he even started over Tony Parker in the 2003 Finals — but woulda been even doper had he not injured his knee as a rook.
(the Sixers actually drafted him bc Larry Brown was beefing with Iverson and they wanted a point guard in the event that they traded AI, which is crazy to think about.)
IIRC, like three dudes from his high school team ended up in the league...Speedy, Lamar Odom — and Omar Cook, for half a second

An old thread from @ashoncrawley that i wish i woulda read before.
I said i shoulda linked to this before bc it basically predicts the response i got to that admittedly spicy tweet — that i am talking trash bc i am not an educator or, as @ashoncrawley says, “some other individuated problem” that makes me just a hater or whatever.
But that WaPo essay in that link above is *much* more provocative and pointed than anything in my take, which was again about media credulousness and the starting assumptions about Black children and schools. And it’s written by an educator to boot.

You should read it.

This convo we’re this am is abt the problematic positioning of education-as-silver-bullet, that sufficiently rigorous/no-excuses schools can offset systemic racism. The most vocal champions of that have been Teach For America and its alums, right? How does one square that circle?
There's a whole economy built around "whatever-it-takes" approaches to educating Black kids, and while the schools wildly differ in practice they often fall back on the same rhetoric and the same kind of too-credulous press to bat away real concerns abt how they treat students.

Co-signing @whstancil’s points...but this school also allegedly abused these kids, roughing them and making them kneel for hours “to teach them submission.”
it’s another example of how often the models at schools like this and “zero-tolerance” charters for Black kids really just look like formalized contempt.

People will countenance that abuse — actually praise it and call it *necessary* — if its targets are poor Black kids.
Also, those “Black kids got into elite colleges!” viral videos and news stories have always been icky for this and other reasons

They are far too credulous, whether we’re talking about this school or Urban Prep in Chicago or wherever else

Megyn Kelly was able to get extremely far because she had a very good PR team and neither the journalists who wrote glossy profiles about her nor the news executive who wanted to hire her ever apparently watched her Fox show.
In July 2013, when Kelly moved from an afternoon slot to Fox primetime, I wrote about the "two sides" of her work. mediamatters.org/blog/2013/07/0…
Kelly was adept at garnering viral moments by making her outwardly misogynistic Fox colleagues look like fools. Those "Megyn Moments" would get a lot of press attention. But the balance of her show was standard Fox, featuring racial fearmongering and conspiracy theories.

Judy Goldstein points out the way that Gilpin in many ways was the intellectually author of the different paradigmatic perspectives in international relations theory.
Goldstein also points out that much of Gilpin’s work would not get past peer review today because of a lack of methodological sophistication, which suggests that IR theory has lost something because of it.
