The most alarming aspect of the last two years has been to watch quite moderate parts of the right drift into full blown conspiracy theory nonsense.
It has fixed me of the British exceptionalism I used to labour under, of us as a fundamentally moderate, stable nation, defined by irony and self-deprecation.
We're just the same as everyone else. The only difference is we weren't invaded recently, so we don't have that historical memory.
But the mania of conspiracy and its twin, authoritarianism, were there in our political culture the whole time.
