The trailer for DC Comics's streaming show TITANS has dropped and holy crow is this embarrassing.
There are a few things that strike me about the trailer for DC Comics' TITANS. The biggest: for a professional production, it looks and feels remarkably like a fan film.

You know, the stuff comics fans got excited about *before they had actual product to get excited about.*
TITANS feels like DC Comics hired the guy who did BATMAN: DEAD END back in 2003 and gave him the same amount of money he used to make that *and he hadn't learned anything about filmmaking since then.*
If Jared Leto's Joker was Hot Topic, DC Comics's TITANS is Spencer Gifts.

It's hard to appreciate just how remarkable a sentence like @nattyover 's is as a historical artifact. A few things that strike me as I'm prepping to teach a big #histsci survey course next term that gets to the LHC in the penultimate week...
@nattyover 1) the Large Hadron Collider is a *massive* assemblage of apparatus, architecture, earthworks, people, bureaucracies, finances, political arrangements, etc.
What kind of vision does it take to make it legible as a machine?
@nattyover 2) And not just a machine, but a *majestic* machine. Who or what gets to be majestic is a rich and fascinating historical question, and it's a relatively recent development that scientific apparatus get to be viewed as monumental, even majestic.

I hate that this needs to be posted, but here we go. The comic industry isn't dying. Sales aren't imploding. The most true thing about comics right now is that little has changed in the last 10-20 years. And that IS a problem... just not the problem we hear about. #comics /1
I completely get why some things are discouraging. Comics feel like they have changed a lot over the last ten years in particular, but in many ways comics have played it safe more than taken risks. But to a lot of readers the recent past is pretty disheartening. I get it. /2
Part of the problem is us. Me. You. We have access to a huge amount of content that 20-30 years ago was a bit harder to get. This means that amazing comics are at our beck and call whenever we want. It also means that the monthly crop of comics has no prayer of stacking up. /3

I mentioned yesterday that the number one “poison pill” for a book is silence. I have endless evidence to prove this statement, from @comichron and their numbers to the effect simple marketing and promotion does for a book. Noise helps. Silence hurts. Not exactly a new idea. /2
But (and here’s where I will get some argument I’m sure), one of the big themes of the last year has been the social media “presence” by creators, with a lot said about political or aggressive statements being a big turn off to readers. But that impact is very questionable. /3

Yesterday I discovered that I was getting more copies of Iceman than I ordered. I posted a short thread which led to a lot of good conversation. But I wanted to take a moment to really explain "overships" and how they work. Being smarter about the business helps everyone! /1
First, what are overships? Simply put, it's when you (as a retailer) order 5 copies of a title and the publisher sends you additional copies beyond what you order. The retailer DOES NOT pay for these other than the shipping cost. Usually the shipping costs are insignificant. /2
One exception to this is when (Marvel specifically) decides to overship 10%-15% of their line. Now you're talking about hundreds of dollars of additional shipping costs. But this hasn't happened in over a year, and knock on wood won't happen again as people revolted. /3

It really hard to fire a coach who goes 9-7 and 9-7 and makes the playoffs after you went 5-27 the two years before that.
Until I was told* it might be otherwise, I thought Mularkey's job was basically completely safe. Wouldn't have bought into any reports.
