Rewatching a film I am very mixed about: Godzilla (2014). Painfully boring characters and awkward pacing severely drag the film down, but the monster sequences are among the best in the series.
When I say the characters are boring, I'm obviously not counting Bryan Cranston. His character is very compelling and well drawn. A great human hook for the almost Quatermass-esque investigation. I like these parts every viewing, and I have seen this film a lot more than most.
This is a mostly good film I enjoy, but... FUCK, this guy is boring as a main character. Humans being the focus of the film was the right call and the source of much of the awe later on, but soulja boy over here better not be in the sequel.
Godzilla finally appears an hour in. I don't mind this. I think the long tease was a fun idea and that the film turning out to be a monster mash instead of a Godzilla rampaging movie was a fun idea. I even don't mind the cut to the news.
...what I DO find weak is that after the long tease and then full big full frontal reveal the movie acts as if the audience still haven't seen Godzilla and goes back to hints and teases, complete with this big mystery reveal sky dive sequence. It's clunky.
So after a lull of boring soldier scenes and weird unnecessary hiding, we get the monster confrontation, and it's.... stunning? Very rare I'm left in awe during spectacle blockbusters, but this worked for me in a way Jurassic World didn't.
The first act set this up as an 'evil Godzilla rampages' film, which is fine with me as my favourites of the series are the original and Shin, but I love how they snuck in a big silly 'Godzilla as superhero' film under the radar. This ending lands for me.
So despite the big structural and dramatic flaws, this movie is still one of the few modern blockbusters I rewatch and always ends with me feeling ecstatic like Ken Watanabe's monster fanboy character, who is the only character I want to return in the sequel.
