The MOC was built to consolidate range control into one location. Prior to this, Each SLC had a blockhouse to serve as mission control for the launch. They were only 100 yards from the rocket.

It was not...ideal safety conditions.

Now there's a single location to provide weather advisories to Patrick, the Cape, and KSC.

Lightning is the primary concern. Florida is a lightning capital with the 3rd highest strikes worldwide.

The MOC is the only spot that tracks intra-cloud lightning strikes. They have 110 sensors throughout KSC cape.

Sometimes they have to look live, instead of at instruments. Instruments don't pick up hail or tornadoes.

The other thing @torybruno said was that it was hard to get a sense of scale. He felt it most when he went to the top. It's essentially a 30 story building.

I "re-certified" in 2013 for both cardiology and cardiac EP with @ABIMCert. At that time, I was told I needed 100 MOC points every 10 years to stay certified. Now I learn I have to acquire "100 MOC points every 5 years" or risk "change" to my cert status.
@ABIMcert I have been diligently working to find a way not to pay another dime to ABIM for MOC points but found I was going crazy trying to do so. Find myself cornered like a rat.
