Hard not to be worried with my delivery date a few weeks away listening to this story on #Today this morning. Maybe time to share some thoughts on here instead of shouting about them to my partner as I have been doing for the last 9 months:…
There is obviously a staffing problem - like most women I’ve barely seen the same midwife twice, meaning notes and prescriptions get lost or delayed. Trying to get one on the phone when you’re chasing up worrying results is almost impossible.
But there is also a question about how these hardworking women are being stretched and how they are spending their time - I can’t tell you how many appointments have been wasted lecturing me about breastfeeding or hypnobirthing - the reason this is a problem is…

The appalling experience of a 13 year old rape victim waiting over 2 years for her trial because of a shortage of judges is far from rare. I’ve been back at the criminal bar for 9 months-in my experience the criminal justice system is on its knees. Desperately underfunded
I have clients accused of rape & other serious offences waiting 3 years for trial. We don’t have enough barristers (with the knock on effect of not enough judges) because of 28% cuts to fees. Our prisons are in crisis; court staff poorly paid working in crumbling courts.
The CPS is starved of cash & therefore people. Our police & probation are over stretched - again it comes down to underfunding & undervaluing the importance of an efficient and fair criminal justice system in a healthy democracy.

A donkey was tied to a tree. One night a ghost cut the rope & released the donkey free.

The donkey went & destroyed the crops in an adjacent farmer's land. Infuriated, the farmer's wife shot the donkey and killed it.
The donkey's owner was devastated at the loss. In reply, he killed the farmer's wife.

Angered by his wife's death, the farmer took a sickle and killed the donkey's owner.

The wife of the donkey's owner got so angry that she & her sons set the farmer's house on fire.
The farmer, looking at his house turned into ashes, killed the wife and children of the donkey's owner.

Finally, when the farmer was full of regret, he asked the ghost as to why did it kill them all?

Just caught up with the full Rwanda announcement. Full of ill-thought through contradictions, no workable detail and so unethical, never mind very vulnerable to legal challenge, the latter may well be the point. Blame the foreigners, blame lawyers, blame the law, leave the ECHR…
Incredibly depressing, if now predictable, to see the govt cynically treating law & lawyers upholding the law, (domestic & international) & the rights of vulnerable people, as fair political game, again.

A deliberate unravelling of confidence in those that hold them to account.
Imagine if Johnson had described this country’s “formidable army of lawyers” as a credit to the country he boasts is world-leading, essential to its strong rule of law traditions, acting in their client’s best interests before a confident, independent judiciary…imagine that.

People should “moderate” their behaviour and wear facemasks because of the high levels of Covid in the UK, the head of the UK Health Security Agency has suggested…
Dr Jenny Harries said that 3.5 million people in England had had coronavirus in the past week and there was significant pressure on some hospitals
She told #Today on BBC Radio 4 that people should be “very sensible and take precautions as periods of high prevalence as we have now”. She suggested that it should include MPs, who now rarely wear masks in the Commons

Britain will not be able to sanction Roman Abramovich and other oligarchs for “weeks and months” because the government has been unable to build a case against them…
The Foreign Office and National Crime Agency have been unable to prove that there are “reasonable grounds” for designating the UK’s most prominent oligarchs for sanctions because they have struggled to link their finances to the Putin regime
Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, wants to sanction Abramovich but has been left frustrated after being told that the government has been unable to build up a case against him and others

The Govt's draconian Police, Crime, Sentencing & Courts Bill is authoritarian, antidemocratic, anti-free speech, & anti-British.

It is an insult to all the brave people who gave their lives in WWII to protect our freedoms.

It MUST be resisted.

#KillTheBill #PoliceBill
Former Director of Policy for PM David Cameron, Camilla Cavendish, today stated that Britain is "sleepwalking into a police state."

She said that MPs claiming facemasks "is an imposition on civil liberties, have waved through these provisions" effectively criminalising protest.
Since the 296 page #PoliceBill passed through the House of Commons, Priti Patel has brought in an ADDITIONAL 18 pages at the last second (effectively an additional Bill) which has had ZERO scrutiny from MPs, & which bring in further draconian provisions.
