/ Preeclampsia—a dangerous form of hypertension—is one of the most common causes of maternal death in the US.

But some of the most trusted consumer health sites in the country have published incomplete or misleading info on it. We contacted some of them propub.li/2KSMLfY
/ Here’s how several of these sites responded after an inquiry from ProPublica reporter @ByNinaMartin:
/ Harvard Health Publishing’s original article said preeclampsia “only occurs during pregnancy.” But it can continue or develop in the postpartum period — when it it deadliest.
/ Harvard Health Publishing agreed to make revisions. Chief Medical Editor Dr. Howard LeWine said, “it’s misguiding people and will get changed.”
/ @medlineplus, a government-affiliated site, said preeclampsia is “cured” by delivering the baby. But again, in some cases symptoms may surface after delivery.
/ Brenda Conaway, Editorial Director for A.D.A.M., a content provider to health care sites including Medline Plus, wrote, “I will be talking with the senior medical editor and our medical director about the article today, and we will update it to reflect any needed changes”
/ @MayoClinic also wrote that “the only cure for preeclampsia is delivery of your baby.” But again, in some cases symptoms may surface after delivery.
/ After our inquiry @MayoClinic updated its language and Dr. Sandhya Pruthi, Mayoclinic.org’s chief medical editor, said it had “self-identified the need to refine its preeclampsia content” before ProPublica reached out.
