Two programmers. One does TDD. One does not. Can both be software craftspeople? Yes, if both are motivated by the love of the craft. That motivation will draw them together in the shared understanding that neither pole of their disagreement was correct.
TDD is good. Absolute, 100%, total, without exception, TDD is a nightmare. Testing at the REPL is good. Exclusively testing at the REPL without unit tests is a nightmare. Manual testing is good. Too much manual testing, without automation, is awful.
Craftsmanship involves the understanding of the techniques, disciplines, and strategies of software development, and how to effectively employ them on a case by case basis. Craftsmanship is nuance and discernment. It is not religion.
