Two programmers. One does TDD. One does not. Can both be software craftspeople? Yes, if both are motivated by the love of the craft. That motivation will draw them together in the shared understanding that neither pole of their disagreement was correct.
TDD is good. Absolute, 100%, total, without exception, TDD is a nightmare. Testing at the REPL is good. Exclusively testing at the REPL without unit tests is a nightmare. Manual testing is good. Too much manual testing, without automation, is awful.
Craftsmanship involves the understanding of the techniques, disciplines, and strategies of software development, and how to effectively employ them on a case by case basis. Craftsmanship is nuance and discernment. It is not religion.

As an honorable and decent human being I think Barack Obama is Donald Trump’s superior; in just about every way. As ceremonial leader of the country, I think Obama was much better than Trump. As chief executive I think Trump has been far superior to Obama.
On taxes, regulations, and foreign policy I support Trump’s policies. On trade I have my doubts. I despise Trump’s juvenile tweets and his lying, self-congratulatory oratory.

I spent the last few days fixing bugs in, and refactoring, a relatively small function that added a new feature to an existing system. It was a horror scene. The previous programmer (who released the code and then quit) had not thought the problem through very carefully.
So there were a number of logical holes that were found by customers within hours of the initial release.

As I examined the code I saw that there were no tests anywhere. There was no way for me to probe the behavior of the code without using the GUI.
Bit by bit, hour by painful hour, I was able to find and repair the logic errors. And I found a lot more of those errors than the customers did (thankfully). But the repairs were _dirty_. I mean really ugly.

@eyydontatme Again, thank you for the considered response. Responses like that are much better than fire and forget tweets. I’m not going to address the media’s use of Nazi-ism here. I’ve beaten that horse to death.
The immigration issue is both simple and complicated. The simple part is that people, and especially, children are suffering. It’s horrific. You made that case very well.
Another simple aspect is that the Trump administration was careless in the extreme. Wickedly careless. The idea that they would use children as pawns to influence the courts, or congress, or other immigrants is awful.

Any object will do. You can surrender to a tree, you can surrender to a river, you can surrender to anything, your wife, your husband, your guru.
Even through stones, people have attained because it is not a question at all to what you #surrender.

You surrender, and that brings the whole thing, that opens the door. Surrendering, the effort to surrender brings an opening to you.
If you are open to stone, you become open to the whole existence, because it is only a question of opening. How can you be open to a stone, and not open to a tree?

TDD Pro-Tip: The first step past beginner-TDD lies in grasping the difference between awkward and graceful collaborations, and learning the myriad contextualized patterns for moving from the former to the latter.
folks invest a little in TDD, maybe cuz they're excited, maybe cuz they're ordered. they read a little. they try an exercise or two. they learn a little about their xUnit options. maybe they boldly even use TDD to write a method or a class in their day job.
all good stuff -- except the dumb-assed ordering of people to do a complex activity without adequate training or support, but that's a topic for another day -- and all, well, beginner stuff.

saw a lot of poetry recitals today. two made a stark impression, and contrast. Both women, one just over 30, one, just below. They both wrote about sex and love.
The older one (A) was very genuine, talking about longing for a life-mate, her loneliness, her faults, fighting the darkness she recognizes in her own desires, her history and habits. Touching simply for the fact of her honesty. I think she will make it, and I hope so.
The younger one (B) frigthened me. In contrast, she instead performed a text which was adressed to her mother (this will be important later), telling her off for worrying about her daughters promiscuity.
