@eyydontatme Again, thank you for the considered response. Responses like that are much better than fire and forget tweets. I’m not going to address the media’s use of Nazi-ism here. I’ve beaten that horse to death.
The immigration issue is both simple and complicated. The simple part is that people, and especially, children are suffering. It’s horrific. You made that case very well.
Another simple aspect is that the Trump administration was careless in the extreme. Wickedly careless. The idea that they would use children as pawns to influence the courts, or congress, or other immigrants is awful.
The more complex problem is to determine a solution. There don’t appear to be any easy ones. On the one hand we want to keep families together. On the other hand, the courts have said we can’t keep children encarcerated with parents.
So if we want to prosecute people who cross the border illegally with their children, as the law dictates, we seem to have only one option. Release them into the country and hope they show up for their hearings.
This is not acceptable to a very large number of Americans who want to see an end to illegal immigration.
But despite the complexities, your complaints about the morality and inhumanity of separating children from parents under these conditions are undeniably true.
Who is to blame for this situation? Certainly Trump and Sessions carry the proximate blame for exacerbating the situation. But it is congress that holds the ultimate blame.
Congress has repeatedly failed to resolve the immigration issue for the last three decades. This is because both sides want the political club to hit the other side with.
My guess is that the situation will be resolved within the next few years. I sure hope so.
