This paper from ‘96 is doing the rounds. It’s interesting but entirely unconvincing. 1/n
Any suggestion of the creators is speculation, as are motives. They are often called fertility amulets, due to exaggerated sexual traits. 2/n
They may be that, or dolls, or porn by some horny teenager. Sometimes they have small heads, and it has been suggested that that’s because we don’t see our own heads. 3/n
Except for Willendorf which has a massive head. And of course, we see other people’s heads. 4/n
And the first one found, Venus Impudique 1864, does not have large ass and breasts. 5/n
In brief: these are fascinating important pieces, and show complex thought and skill, a cognitive ability that includes abstract thought, and much of the symptoms of behavioural modernity. 6/n
We cannot know the minds of others, let alone prehistoric minds, and speculation is fun but it is speculation.
