It seems like a lot of artists I've talked to this year to are experiencing very similar feelings to my own, so here's a little thread on some things that have been helping me.
👨‍❤️‍👨 Self compassion. It's pretty simple, we beat ourselves up. A lot of the negative feelings I have about my work are brought on by my own self. Learn to give yourself a break.
🧙‍♂️Give yourself time to think. I put this immense pressure on myself to create, to constantly be making new work but I find that my best ideas come when I'm not working at all. Leave your mind open to new ideas rather than painfully trying to shit one out.
🥅 Set goals. Maybe you haven't thought about this in a while, or maybe you've achieved them already. Give yourself something to strive toward, in the near future and the distant.
🛋️Set boundaries. This might be the most important. Set healthy boundaries for your work. I don't normally work weekends anymore, I don't work late nights. I block out time for the other things in my life. When I'm done with work for the day, I'm done.
💩 Stop giving a shit. Seriously. You'll never be able to satisfy your raging ego. Once you reach the "next level", the process will just start again and you'll repeat this process to the grave.
💡Focus instead, on ideas that excite you. This is the fuel that drives motivation, and the key to it all. Give yourself the time to figure out what it is that really excites you. This is the real route towards breaking through to the "next level".
🧐 Re-evaluate your process. Find better, more enjoyable routes to finishing your work. I found that I wasn't enjoying my process for certain things, so I changed it. It takes time, but it saves time and makes the process more enjoyable.
I probably forgot some stuff, but that's the gist. We are not full of endless energy, and if you haven't felt it yet, you will. Make sure to be good to yourself, and to be patient and give yourself real time to grow and change as an artist.
