Under Operation Impact, the NYPD saturated high crime areas with additional police officers with the mission to engage in aggressive, order maintenance policing. In these Impact Zones, police stops spiked by 33%, misdemeanor arrests by 11% and violation arrests by 30%. 2/5

Yet, reading test scores for 13-14 year old African-American boys decreased. The size of the effect is about a fifth of the black-white test score gap and similar in size to some popular programs designed to increase educational outcomes. 4/5
We find no effect for African-American girls and Hispanic boys or girls (sample for white students is too small). Some of the effect for black boys seems to be driven by a decrease in school attendance. More on mechanisms in paper osf.io/preprints/soca…. 5/5
