At the time the tax cut passed I said over and over again that Democrats and the AARP needed to warn loudly and often that this legislation would inevitably lead to cuts in Social Security & Medicare. They didn't listen. Trump did.
The overwhelming thrust of Democratic criticism of the tax bill was not that it would hemorrhage revenues and inevitably lead to cuts in Social Security and Medicare, but rather that the legislation was not tilted sufficiently toward the poor and middle class.
In other words Democrats essentially accepted the Republican premise of the tax bill that taxes were too high and needed to be cut a lot. The only issue was distributional--which group would benefit most. The honest position would have been no tax cut for anyone, can't afford it.
