The biggest lie in American politics is that Republicans hate deficits. The truth is that they LOVE deficits because it gives them an excuse to pretend they are fiscally responsible, slash benefits for the poor & posture for gullible media-types who stupidly take them seriously.
The history of the last 20 years shows clearly that EVERY time we get close to a sustainable budget, Republicans blow it to pieces with massive tax cuts that they claim will lose no revenue. When deficits arise, they always lie that they are caused by spending, not revenue loss.
Keep in mind that the media's favorite Republican, Paul Ryan, a consensus VSP (very serious person) had a massive tax cut in all of his phony-baloney budget-balancing plans. Their purpose was to slash benefits, not balance the budget.
Footnote--spending for interest on the debt is rising rapidly because of deficits caused by Republican tax cuts & Fed tightening. But Republicans always primarily blame benefits for the poor like food stamps.
