It would be nice, however, to acknowledge that the handwriting was on the wall long before Trump came along and some of us saw it. These now ex-Republicans stayed in the party for 10 long years after I left, continuing to benefit from their party affiliation.
Unless those of us who left earlier are acknowledged, the Johnny-come-latelies get unjustified credit for insight and courage. The big question they should all be asked is, What took you so long?
I don't wish to be churlish when the vast bulk of conservatives, including the movement's "intellectuals" are slavishly pro-Trump. It does take courage to break away--leave the church. But I fear that too many will blame only Trump and miss the rot at the core of the movement.
That rot will be there long after Trump is gone. It is fueled by the vast sums of money sloshing around the political system that draws grifters like a pile of shit draws flies, and for the same reason. Corruption & personal enrichment encourage a win-at-all-cost mentality.
Which in turn gives short-shrift to valid, time-tested conservative principles in favor of reprehensible short-term tactics such appealing to racism, bigotry, extremism, conspiracy theorists & other political scum. It encourages anti-democratic voter suppression & vote stealing.
