This is the full text of my letter to the CEO of Rangers FC. I stand 100% behind the decision to respect the concerns of the local community. All Rangers have been asked to do is improve community engagement. Their aggressive & highly personalised response has been shocking.
For what it’s worth (though shouldn’t have to say this) I have no personal football affiliations. Football matters to me because it matters to Glasgow. Rangers & Celtic are important Glasgow businesses & brands. That doesn’t mean they get to ride roughshod over communities.
The role of @FMcAveety @pauline4glasgow @AnasSarwar @ProfTomkins in knowingly exploiting sectarian division on this issue can’t be ignored. They are responsible for stoking the abuse directed at me, @SNPdavid & his family & Council officers. They bring shame on Glasgow politics.

Another point on asylum accommodation: people who get leave to remain in the UK are *also* served with eviction notices from their Serco accommodation & expected to find new digs very quickly. Many of them register with @GlasgowCC homelessness services.
There’s very very little transition period given or opportunity for folk to find an income (which they’re not allowed to do as asylum seekers, of course). @GlasgowCC finds folk permanent accommodation as quickly as possible, but we get not a penny of assistance from @GOVUK
(Appears I’ve now officially broken my hitherto very strict holiday Twitter fast and we haven’t even left Schipol airport yet!)

Appalling as this is, am glad this policy now getting public attention. This has been going on for years. @JenLaydenSNP & myself have repeatedly made strong representations to Home Office Ministers & officials. We were assured Serco would at least engage with GlasgowCC in future
I’m furious Serco have announced another round of evictions - and on this scale - without any discussion with the organisations who have to deal with the impact of this on the ground. But let’s be clear: the blame lies squarely with the UK Home Office, who could stop this now
In 2012, @GlasgowCC were the first Council in the UK to condemn the forced destitution of asylum seekers. I moved the motion as my maiden speech. This is a deliberate, longstanding policy by the UK government to drive already vulnerable people on to the streets. It needs to end.

Some points about parades: I share the revulsion at the hate crime committed against Canon White & have strong sympathy with the petition but: the Council simply does NOT have the power to enact a blanket ban on parades by any organisation 1/
I have instructed officers to ensure that we use the powers we do have to their fullest extent & have asked @policescotland colleagues to assist us in doing that: the Council can’t legally act without grounds being given to us by the police 2/
I’ve also asked for ways of objecting to planned parades to be made much more prominent on our website & made available through the My Glasgow app. We can only act on objections made in advance, on specific applications & on grounds in 2006 Act 3/
