I don’t believe “everything happens for a reason”—that strikes me as absurd. I *do* believe that every instance of suffering has something to teach us, and being open to those lessons makes it possible for us to find meaning there.
The people who taught me the most about this are Viktor Frankl, Pema Chödrön, and Seneca. edbatista.com/the-art-of-sel…
My capacity for suffering of any sort—from physical pain to personal adversity—is highly contingent on 1) my *perception* of that capacity, 2) my ability to learn from suffering and find meaning there. This allows for agency under any circumstances.

I find @AlexHonnold fascinating because he so vividly illustrates a dynamic we all experience: Our PERCEPTION of the relative safety or danger of a situation can significantly affect the risks involved. Not always true, but more often than we realize. 1/
I can't watch that video without getting sweaty palms and a pit in my stomach. I'll never be able to perceive that situation as safe. But his ability to perceive it as such is what makes it safe for him. The risk still exists, of course, but he's able to navigate it. 2/
The same is true for all of us in many--not all, but many--situations we must navigate in the course of an ordinary day. Being mindful of our PERCEPTION of danger is an essential step in creating the safety we need to successfully take on bigger risks. edbatista.com/2017/01/dont-j… 3//

i try to understand exactly what that means in every event and thought and obstacle in my life. why did this happen this way, why didnt it, etc. for the most part, with a little bit of digging in to the subconscious, it is quite a simple task to dig up the root causes of the
emotional triggers that hold us back every day. you see, finding the root of the cause is just the first step
next it is required to figure out why we, ourselves, are wrong about that belief.

(THREAD) There are four types of cooperation deals that Paul Manafort could have entered into with Special Counsel Mueller—we don't know which one he has yet, but we can discuss each of them in turn and that's what I do in this thread. I hope you'll read on and share with others.
1/ The biggest bombshell would be if Manafort decided to give Mueller the goods on Trump—it'd be a bombshell because it'd break Manafort's Joint Defense Agreement (JDA) with Trump, end Manafort's chance at a pardon from Trump, and run a very high chance of ending this presidency.
2/ As authority for the claim Manafort flipping on Trump would endanger Trump's presidency I cite... Trump. NBC reported months ago that Trump was telling friends on the phone that he could "crush" Mueller and wasn't afraid of his probe *because* Manafort wasn't going to "flip."

Heartened by Father’s Day wishes.

In recognition that this day like all things in life could mean different things to different people -parent and child, positive and negative-I’d like to speak here about fathers who’ve experienced loss.

This month I became one.
Anyone within a galaxy of me knows we were expecting twins. We lost Amadeo in the moments leading up to childbirth. We delivered Enzo weeks early in an emergency. Last week was our memorial mass for Amadeo. This week Enzo came home happy, healthy and strong.
The duality of all this - the anguish and the joy - is impossible to grasp. But it’s one we know we must navigate. For me that means two things: giving voice to our feelings, and allowing others to lift us when we can’t shoulder the load of those feelings.
