I'm going to need people who ARE NOT INVOLVED IN THE ROMANCE GENRE to stop jumping in with both feet and TRYING TO FIX A PROBLEM MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN FIXING FROM THE INSIDE FOR LITERAL DECADES.
Imagine thinking you have any right to criticize a billion dollar industry because YOU SAW SOMETHING RELATED TO IT IN A CHECKOUT LANE ONCE.
AND THEN CALLING IT SLEAZY AND USING OUTDATED STEROTYPES AND DEMANDING A PAT ON THE BACK WHILE YOU ERASE THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF MARGINALIZED AUTHORS, MODELS, AND ARTISTS.

This is a good thread. I have similar feelings when I see some of the stuff about billionaire romance that goes around, declaring it dead or shallow or inappropriate for our current political climate.
I totally get not wanting to read rich, white, alphole billionaire heroes. But I have a real issue with the idea that poor and working-class women aren't supposed to fantasize about having a lot of money because *ideological purity*.
We see a lot of people in various privileged positions declaring a trope dead while not thinking past their own experiences on the subject. A black author or reader wants a book about black billionaires in a genre dominated by whiteness? There has to be room.

Yesterday, I saw the best clarification tweet I've ever seen, in which someone said basically, "I'm not trying to build up Person A by tearing down Person B. They're both assholes but Person A is just slightly less of an asshole," and I have been thinking about it ALL NIGHT.
I feel like we sometimes think that if we criticize an author or other creative's behavior in a situation, people assume we're picking a side or declaring undying loyalty.
I've publically criticized authors whose work I like. I've publically defended people I'd love to see get hit by cars. Sometimes, it's the context of the situation and not the people involved that someone is commenting on.

So, I just started watching this show called The Good Witch. And I'm only four episodes in and it's basically your standard Hallmark type thing...but with really interesting Witch representation? How did I find this?
It just struck me that there is rarely a show that's like, super wholesome and positive about characters who are Pagan/Wiccan/Witches, etc. I'm so enjoying it.
The cast could use fewer white people. Like, I'm white and I'm having a hard time keeping all the white people straight, that's how many white people there are.

I got a copy when it came out but went ahead and got more when the book came out. I've seen these plays live and they're breathtaking and I love them and in honor of this sale I'm going to go off for a while with a list of Mormon Lit recommendations and reasons I like each.
I'll start with these plays. @mel_leilani's films (Freetown and Jane & Emma) are more widely known and are both important milestones in Mormon cinema. But Mel is at her very best writing for the intimacy of the stage.

And absolutely infuriating. It bears stark, unflinching witness to the dehumanization that defines our criminal justice system.

2. The core shocking point is this: parents in prison w no history of abuse, even for relatively short terms like 15 months, are more likely to lose their children permanently than those accused of physical or sexual abuse.

Prison for property crime is worse than sexual abuse.
3. Now, of course, many people tangled up in our criminal justice system suffer from drug abuse, mental health problems, homelessness, etc. That’s WHY they’re in the system, especially women, and especially mothers.

Family court is hard. But our approach remains appalling.

However nuts it’s been, we’re watching the beginning of something worse here.
(For y’all following at home, the next thing will be calls for “protection of the electoral system’s integrity” and that’s when the foundation crack becomes so wide as to crumble)
As well: those calls will come from both left and right, and they will mostly seem both reasonable and necessary.

To wit: Texas. At this point depending on how many votes have already been cast, it’s not unimaginable that there might be lawsuits and IT fuckery abounding

Let’s unpack this destructive racist nonsense from the perspective of a publishing professional. I probably look at 50 books for every book I buy, if I’m lucky. As a result, I don’t give feedback for most rejections. So why write these things? Why take the time to be racist?
When I give feedback, it’s usually because I see some potential in the author, and want to help them improve. There’s no way for an author to improve based on this feedback, though.
Very occasionally, I give a rejection that tries to correct something I found offensive in a submission. For example, I’ve sent rejections trying to explain how a work struck me as appropriative. Try to fix the problem habit.
