Part of my tentative re-entry to Twitter has been a more dedicated purge of my follows, because a lot of people apparently went very slightly mad in the last few years and I hadn't noticed at any conscious level.
I unfollowed probably twenty or thirty people and muted some more with a spreadsheet so I would remember to check up and see if they'd come back to themselves in a few months.
I got rid of the DONALD TRUMP IS OUR SAVIOR and DONALD TRUMP IS THE DEVIL people and let me tell you, the experience is so much better.
It is, however, deeply depressing how much the orange carny did to so many people whose commentary I used to genuinely enjoy.

The weird little moral panics of the Trump Era are amazingly more disturbing for what they say about the state of our society than the election of the Dorito Lord itself.
We're late into "Trump Conspired With Saudi Arabia to Kill a Journalist/Trump Yelling at CNN Made Saudi Arabia Think They Could Kill a Journalist" and midway toward the peak of "Trump Will Send the Air Force to Strafe Unarmed Women and Children."

"We have a moral duty to aid the weak and the oppressed." Compelling.

"We have no right to control our own borders if the right age-and-sex mix appears there." Self-evidently stupid and counterproductive.
Arguments are not won purely on merit, but on the manner in which they're proposed and argued.
This is especially true with matters in which the moving party seeks to have our laws, if not suspended, then at least highly-charitably enforced and interpreted: If you want to make a case that our immigration law as it exists is immoral, you can't simply hand-wave at it.

Being enamored of the way things were when you were young does not make you conservative; it makes you nostalgic.
Protesting one's conservatism has very little meaning if the substance of your protest is nostalgia and self-appellation.
Similarly, if the entirety of one's conservatism is a single policy stance, coupled with a congenital resistance to change, this merely makes one idiosyncratically intransigent.

I have a ton of brain fog today, so bear with me, but I saw a lot of convos happening about #MCAS last night and I wanted to chime in with some info I've learned in the last decade since my #mastocytosis diagnosis.
For those unfamiliar, everyone's bodies have #MastCells. They're part of your immune system and they're responsible for a few things, but primarily they store ~200+ chemicals (called mediators) and release them when fighting off infections, allergens, etc.
These mediators do lots of different things, and some of them are responsible for telling other cells in your body what to do. When Mast cells release mediators it can set off big chain reactions that can impact most, if not all, the systems in your body.

Most of you probably know that Tumblr will be “officially” banning adult oriented media on their site this month. The truth is Tumblr had always had rules against porn but they only started enforcing them recently. Why? Because Tumblr’s staff are utter morons.
It’s pretty much common knowledge that Tumblr’s app got pulled from the App Store because it started being used to circulate child porn. But the thing is, this isn’t some underground porn ring fueled by criminals (at least not in the traditional sense of the concept).
People (sometimes justifiably) mock Tumblr as a social justice echo chamber, but that’s not completely accurate. It used to be that, but it has breeded a weird environment not unlike Twitter where people realized that you can find like minded people on there and not be punished.

It sure seems like Sheryl Sandberg lied and tried to cover it up with a statement on Thanksgiving Eve. It's extremely disappointing behavior from anyone in a leadership position as crucial as hers. It's also hard to extricate from her role as the 'Lean In' woman.
I've been reading and thinking a lot about Sandberg's role in all this. There's a lot to discuss re: Zuckerberg's management as well. But as a young professional woman in media/tech who spent time discussing Sandberg's strategies with other women, her role is potent here.

In furtherance of the #counterintelligence discussion around the GRU and its competency, I want to address some recent reporting and analysis. Two articles - and one shared question - come to mind. /1
The 1st article takes the kind of argument I've made - the GRU has been sloppy resulting even successes generating some effects one would associate with qualified failures - and runs with it to the extreme. /2 bloomberg.com/view/articles/…
I have done my best to put as much nuance into my threads on this. I don't think so much that the GRU is incompetent (they have achieved numerous significant mission objectives) as that their tradecraft and OPSEC leaves much to desired, with that likely hurting them w/ Putin. /3

For a Trump voter, to admit that he's corrupt, that he conspired with a foreign power and is now that foreign power's stooge, and that he consistently betrays those who backed him, would be to admit that you were a fool for supporting him in the first place. 2/
