It may have been drafted, but its survival chances in the real world of democratic politics and what voters actually want are those of an ice cube in Death Valley.
One rather obvious example is the suggestion of free movement of labour - where the EU is cited as an example to follow. From a pro-Brexit outfit such as @BrexitCentral or a pro-Brexit MP like @annietrev, that is ... chutzpah.
The suggestion of mutual recognition of qualifications and free movement of professional services is ... ambitious where you are talking about a country where those things don’t really exist between its 50 States.
Another chutzpah passage. It’s ECJ enforcement of these principles that has got Brexiters so cross over the last 45 years.
These are three of the four principles of the single market, which apparently we can’t live with (see above for the fourth).
As to the politics: trade agreements require consensus, else they won’t happen. That’s basic politics. But here consensus means keeping the right happy but ignoring the left. It won’t work.
And here’s a summary. If anyone thinks U.K. farmers will or can live with zero tariffs against the US they are in for a shock.
The second and third bullets raise interesting implications for the NHS. (Which of course means political 💀 in the U.K.)
The 5th bullet raises interesting issues if the U.K. is to maintain data flows with the EU after Brexit. And again, privacy and worry about what US corporations can do with our data raises political issues, as anyone who hasn’t been asleep for the last 10 years will have noticed.
As for the last bullet point: the reference to national security is ... interesting given the Trump Administration’ (mis)use of the concept.
And the reference to “scientifically unsubstantiated concerns” means GM foods, hormones, and chlorine washed chicken. Not easy for UK voters to swallow.
What this shows is that even a self-described “shorter and simpler” trade agreement with the US raises very similar questions to those raised by the EU ref: trade and competition v regulatory sovereignty.
But this time @BrexitCentral and @annietrev are on the other side of the barricades. /ends
