james alex fields appeared briefly in court this afternoon. there were pretrial motions on the 10am docket, but the judge met with counsel for a two hour pretrial conference in chambers. no motions were heard.
judge moore just exited the courthouse, asking me on his way out, “was it worth staying?” of the two hours i sat in the courtroom while they met in chambers. it was not! but you never know.

GnLeelmer woodard, counsel to many fascists & white supremacists, represented preston through his sentencing but has dropped him as a client. somebody must’ve stopped paying elmer... he’s dropped quite a few of his fashy clients lately.
at preston’s arraignment back in may, elmer didn’t know the sentence for the crime to which he counseled his client to plead guilty. the withdrawal as counsel is likely due to nonpayment, but i’d certainly want a different lawyer if i were in his shoes
elmer was also representing jacob goodwin, recently sentenced to ten years for the assault on deandre harris last year. goodwin, like preston, plans to appeal. as with preston, elmer withdrew as counsel at sentencing.
well that was quick! the court has appointed a mr. randall to represent richard preston. he was sentenced 8/21, but the sentencing order was withheld until new counsel could be appointed. now that he’s got a lawyer, the order will be entered & they have 30 days to file an appeal.
