one interesting side effect of the uncharacteristic hiring/firing/resigning aspect of the current govt is that the whole notion of “political lifer” could finally be thrown into question
as if it really takes entire 2 or 4yr terms to get half-assed shit done. get in, get out. be gone.
oh you care about your country and identify pain points in which your unique skill stack adds value and results in actionable data for sustained improvement? get your ass off the bench
oh you’re just another empty suit embalmed with insert-any-ideology-here riding the current sociocultural wave? get lost
in many cases today, good policy is not achieved at all by the elected official, committees, etc. it’s in fact the hordes of staffers who are highly mismanaged by folks with truly poor leadership skills
there’s little to no project mgmt, at least effective PM, and little to no comprehensive modeling of decision-making (that can actually be done rapidly given modern computing power)
efficient project teams could redefine the nature of policy making. treat “tough issues” with a startup problem mentality. creative teams pitch solutions measured across an array of data points.
the quantitatively + qualitatively “best” solution (could even be top 3 or more bc solutions are never one-size-fits-all and likely local/regional), get selected for 18mo. trial runs to accumulate field data
and yes, our infrastructures and institutions will have to bend to allow such change. they can and they should.
if a model proves successful, then it should be replicated further. if it seems like the right fit, it should be implemented. and it shouldn’t give a fuck about your feelings
this isn’t about fashion, it’s about the evolving pillars of our society and civilization that should, ideally, improve humankind as a whole. starting from the bottom, growing more complex thereafter
oh and it shouldn’t be a likeability contest. in fact, might be best if the entire pitching process was anon, and project teams and project team leaders (politician 2.0) won’t be revealed until some later point like when a model proves valuable and useful.
the dork charismatic dinosaurs (muh public service) lacking an iota of intelligence never get to walk through the door or deceive and manipulate the attention of a captive and unwitting public
instead we have fresh, top of the food chain ideas surfacing amidst heated competition to devise the best strategies and move the ball forward. then put your best mimetic copy of Feynman to the frontline as explainers sans media commentary
