Wisconsin's Manufacturing & Ag Credit: Stay with me, I know it sounds boring, but if you look under the hood you can see one of the most skewed, ineffective tax cuts in WI. @GovWalker (pro) and @Tony4WI (con) have been speaking out about the credit...here are 6 things to know.
#1 The MAC (Manuf & Ag Credit) strips resources from important public priorities that are vital to the economic well-being of businesses and families. Big time, too -- to the tune of $1.4 billion over the last 7 years, and $334 million in this year alone.
#2 The MAC is a windfall for a select few. Most of the credit (76%) goes to millionaires, even though they make up just 0.2% of tax filers.
#3 Companies can receive the MAC without creating a single job. They can lay off workers, close factories, & send job overseas and still have their income taxes wiped out by the credit. Is it any surprise that the growth in manufacturing jobs in WI lags the national pace?
#4 The credit is costing more than double what was originally anticipated. The cost of the credit has swelled far beyond the amount that lawmakers targeted whey they passed the tax break, for a cost overrun of nearly $800 million over seven years. Yowzers.
#5 The MAC picks winners and losers among WI industries. The manufacturing sector is an important part of Wisconsin’s economy, but that doesn’t mean they should get a pass on paying for the public services the business needs.
#6 Wisconsin farmers are mostly left out of this credit, even though the name of the credit includes both industries. In the past, $5 out of every $6 goes to manufacturers.
