(1) One person is dead after an active shooter incident at the University of Utah tonight. The suspect is a registered sex offender. He has left the campus area but appears to still be at large.

(2) Police have released a 2018 photo of the 37yo suspect to aid in the search. He has a long history of protective orders against him, and the 19 year old female student found dead tonight had reportedly been in a relationship with him.

(3) The suspect was later found by Police, deceased. The student he killed was 21 year old Lauren McCluskey, from Washington.
(4) Lauren had been lied to by Melvin Rowland and she ended the one-month relationship, and asked Police for help. Her mother's statement:
(5) Lauren McCluskey was a bright young woman with her whole life ahead of her. Like so many others, she was killed just after ending a relationship. This is the most dangerous time for women or men who are trying to escape domestic abuse.
(6) Police should have given her full information about his lengthy criminal record, and she should have take proper precautions.

I only say this in an effort to help others. Domestic abuse in all its forms is a scourge. It drives a massive share of the violent crime in the US.
(7) A restraining order is just a piece of paper. It's necessary but not sufficient. We can use situational awareness, and be armed and ready to defend ourselves and others. Law enforcement agencies must lift their game, too. Cops get killed on domestic abuse call outs.
(8) The University of Utah community was hurt a year ago, almost to the day, by a young couple who were on an inter state crime and murder spree. A plea deal was allowed to let the male avoid the death penalty. The female is awaiting trial.

(9) In both the 2017 Boutain and 2018 Rowland homicide cases, the offenders were able to kill because the criminal justice system had been too soft on them in the past.

Voters want their elected representatives to be tough on crime. They are very aware of the problem.
(10) When it comes to violent crime, most voters do not care about the background of criminals. They care about catching them & decisively protecting the community from them. That is the duty of government,

Voters are about to send a message even stronger than they did in 2016.
