There is no excuse for the lack of organized data surrounding #MaternalMortality and its racial disparities. Black women are still 3-4x more likely to die from pregnancy complications, even when you control for socioeconomic differences. #MaternalJustice
Hard truth is that this issue is bigger than a health chart. It's about how + why the voices of black patients are discounted or denied. Not a phenomenon limited to health care by any means - a societal stain this country desperately must address. #MaternalJustice
While I appreciate state-level efforts to make #MaternalJustice a priority - CA has made great strides with inequity in maternal care, and my home state of MA is studying autopsy reports & medical charts of those who suffered maternal deaths - we must do better.

Weaponizing critical worker benefits to gain contract concessions has become a too common and toxic corporate practice. National Grid chose to lock out their workers, at great expense to the impacted employees, their families, and our entire Commonwealth. (1/4)

Some people are asking me questions like this. I think schools that center the black experience and/or are truly representative of our multiracial nation are critical. I have never argued that integration is a few black kids going into white schools with white teachers/curriculum
I do think an important point here is that the parents interviewed are advocates, people who have the ability to exercise choice and not the parents I am writing about who have few options and are not choosing segregated/black schools but are being forced into them.
The segregated schools most black kids attend cannot send children to South Africa. They do not have middle-class black families in them. They do not even necessarily have black teachers.

This year I introduced the LIFT Act and the Rent Relief Act — two bills to help our middle class. With housing, tuition, and other costs rising year after year, it’s time Congress helped to put more money back in the pockets of millions of American families.

latest @CDCgov data tells different story...rather than waiting to publish academic paper, decided to share analysis right away

2/ first of all, > 80% maternal death does not occur on the day of delivery... >60% does not even occur within a week of delivery

The great majority of these deaths are at home or in the community...NOT in the hospital

3/ second, causes of maternal death shifting...deaths due to acute pregnancy conditions (hypertension, hemorrhage) have been declining for decades

meanwhile, deaths due to chronic conditions, particularly mental health on the upswing

The US has the highest maternal mortality rates of any industrialized country, and steadily climbing. American women are 3 times as likely to die during the maternal period as Canadian women. In the U.K., it’s so low that men are more likely to die while their partner’s pregnant.
And within the US there’s a huge racial divide. African American women are four times more likely to die from pregnancy and childbirth complications than white women. We don’t track this issue on a federal level, so it’s hard to definitively identify cause. But some obvs factors:
1. Lack of access to birth control doesn’t allow women to plan pregnancies, especially women with high-risk medical conditions. Half of pregnancies in the US are unplanned; this adds stress to domestic relationships and cause problems at work. Birth control is healthcare.
