'Whataboutism' & 'both sideism' are dangerous tools when used as rhetorical strategy to excuse sins

But they're *important tools* for exposing *our own tendencies* to compromise our principles when politically expedient

Case in point: Leftists up in arms about @LenaEpstein's...
... attack on her critics as "religiously intolerant" might revisit their tendency to attack critics of @JuliaCarmel__ as "racist."

And if you don't like how this JforJ "rabbi" appropriates Judaism, you might question why you were OK with @JuliaCarmel__ appropriating not only
... Jewishness* but the identities of immigrant, college grad, working class, etc.

The point isn't that both sides are equally to blame for the way Americans (and other countries) are divided today, or that they are equally suspect to excusing their side's sins. It's evident...
... there's a stark asymmetry in that regard. Rather, the point is to use occasions like this to introspect about our own tendencies to engage in dangerous motivated reasoning (see thread: ) & to *combat* them.

*N.B. If you identify w the Tree of Life..
... Synagogue today, you should know that it wouldn't confer rights upon anyone not born Jewish <for honors, marriage, etc> until they convert in a way deemed legitimate by the Conservative movement. As w the JforJ "rabbi"- a white guy born Jewish it seems (ahem: leftists who...
swore @JuliaCarmel__'s identity wouldn't have been questioned if she were male or white), every community has rights of membership. And if you don't meet those rules but declare yourself a member, you are appropriating-- i.e., stealing-- someone else's identity.
