Hello from #SCOTUS, where Justice Brett Kavanaugh will have his investiture this morning. Trump is expected to attend, but as @chrisgeidner is reporting, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is in the hospital with rib fractures. No cameras inside, stay tuned for updates after
On Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's hospitalization after a fall, from @chrisgeidner: buzzfeednews.com/article/davidm…
It's official: Justice Brett Kavanaugh was just sworn in at the bench at his investiture at #SCOTUS this morning in a brief, formal ceremony. Trump was in attendance, along with a very, very long list of notable judicial, legal and political figures. Here's what went down:
Trump was the last person to come into the courtroom. Everyone in attendance was instructed to rise, the room stayed silent. Then the justices entered (not Ginsburg, see: buzzfeednews.com/article/davidm…). Kavanaugh, in his robe, was seated in the gallery, along with his wife.
Chief Justice Roberts extended a "warm welcome" to Trump, and then recognized Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker to come to the lectern. Former attorney general Jeff Sessions did not appear to be in attendance. DAG Rod Rosenstein and SG Noel Francisco came in with Whitaker.
Whitaker moved to enter Kavanaugh's commission into the record, and the clerk of court read it aloud (it has Sessions' name on it, along with Trump). Kavanaugh was then escorted up to the bench — all the justices stood, the room remained seated.
As Kavanaugh made his way down the line to get to Roberts in the middle, he shook hands with Gorsuch, Sotomayor, Breyer and Thomas. Roberts administered the oath. Kavanaugh shook Roberts' hand, then shook hands with Alito and Kagan as he walked the rest of the way to his seat.
Roberts extended a "very warm welcome" to Kavanaugh, and said they wished him a long and happy career. And that was it. There was no mention of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's injury and hospitalization, and there were no speeches or remarks. It's a very formal ceremony.
I will now attempt to list everyone I recognized in attendance today at Kavanaugh's investiture, broken into categories. This is by no means an exhaustive list — the room was crowded and I'm not the tallest reporter. But here's who I saw:
From the White House: President Trump, Melania Trump, John Kelly, Sarah Sanders. Also former White House counsel Don McGahn.
From the Senate: McConnell, Graham, Flake (didn't see Grassley)
From the House: Issa, Goodlatte
From DOJ: Acting AG Whitaker, DAG Rosenstein, SG Francisco, Civil Division head Jody Hunt
Lawyers of note: former AAG Rachel Brand, former judge/SG/independent counsel Ken Starr, and former AGs Alberto Gonzales, John Ashcroft and Michael Mukasey
Judges!
From Kavanaugh's former court, the DC Circuit: Chief Judge Garland and Sentelle, Millett, Wilkins, Williams, Randolph, Pillard, Tatel, Srinivasan, Katsas
DC district court: Leon, Howell, Friedrich, Hogan, Contreras, Lamberth, Boasberg, Cooper, Kelly, McFadden, Friedman
That's all I've got for now. Kavanaugh won't be making the traditional walk down the front steps of the Supreme Court for security reasons, per the court, see: cnn.com/2018/11/02/pol…
