For those of my followers who were disappointed O'Rourke didn't win: We can take a moment to recharge, but I want you to recognize what the Democratic Party of Texas has done this election cycle.

O'Rourke closed the gap in Texas by 13%.
I count at least seven congressional seats in Texas that Democrats can view as targets for 2020. Seven seats! That could flip the Congressional delegation from Texas from red to blue. We will also have only two seats we would need to defend.
Obviously that is a dream and the work to achieve that has to get started soon. So let's take a moment, regroup, and get back to work.
The other two states where I would be making this speech (Georgia and Florida) are still somewhat up in the air.

Here’s what Democrats should counter-offer:

1. No more taxpayer money to any property owned by Trump’s family. If he wants to go to his Florida resort, he can foot the bill for the Secret Service himself.
2. The full DREAM act including permanent codified legal status and a path to citizenship for those under the age of 15 when they entered the country.
3. The reversal of the tax cuts among the highest income brackets as part of Trump’s tax proposal.

Someone asked me this morning "What's next?" and it got me thinking about what Democrats should do with their new control of the House of Representatives. The answer is clear: Voting rights. /1
Some have suggested restoring the VRA, but I honestly think the VRA may not address some of the issues that we have seen at the polls lately. So, instead, I propose the following reforms. /2
1. We need to reduce and ultimately eliminate long wait times at the polls. As such, Congress should require monitoring of wait times at half-hour intervals on a precinct level, and those wait times will be published and audited after the election. /3

Northam should resign. That said, I find it interesting that all of the conservatives who love to complain about “the Twitter mob” seem suddenly unconcerned about Twitter mobs.
1. I don't think this is just a matter of hypocrisy. I think it tells us something interesting and important about the folks who are often most concerned about "Twitter mobs." They are not afraid of "the mob" qua mob, they are afraid of what that supposedly mob stands for.
2. After all, I don't know how to describe what happened on conservative media in regard to Northam's recent comments on abortion other than "a Twitter mob." Virtually every single conservative with a large number of followers jumped all over Northam as a defender of infanticide.

Been hoping to do the MKO Abiola/June 12 thread as promised before now but events are sometimes beyond one’s control. Seeing as tomorrow is the 25th anniversary of that date, I’m sure it is definitely a good time to do it.

And so, here goes: a Thread on MKO Abiola and June 12.
It is difficult to separate MKO Abiola from the story of June 12 and the June 12 struggle because as Gani pointed out back then, Abiola was the symbol of the mandate of Nigerians and his imprisonment became the rallying point of the struggle.

And MKO Abiola was a complicated man
Even more interesting, the June 12 story itself is a most complicated one with many sides but mainly two - the political and the ethnic; and two other ones - the activism around it and on a lesser scale, the family involvement.

The common thread though is Abiola himself.

THREAD showing evidence I've come across that suggests the recent murder of a young Jewish man in California was committed by a neo-Nazi, possibly as a politically motivated killing. (Sat on this for a week waiting on editors but now bits of the info are already out, so fuck it).
On January 2nd a 19-year-old Jewish man went missing in southern California. He turned up dead on Jan 9th, buried in a shallow grave in Borrego Park (wikimapia.org/#lang=en&lat=3…). A former class-mate was arrested on suspicion of the murder on Jan 12th.
The deceased is Blaze Bernstein and the suspected killer--now charged with the murder--is Sam Woodward, 20. (Referred to here on out as Blaze and Sam). See the next tweet for the LA Times story.
