The PM's backstop letter refers to already 'more than 30 existing types of regulatory check between GB and NI at present'. But what are they?

The DUP have criticised the 'very rigid' approach taken by Migration Advisory Committee in its recommendations for a post-Brexit immigration policy. The party made the comment after a meeting with Northern Ireland business representatives.
The party said: 'Appropriate future access to low-skilled labour in NI is important, particularly given the potential for local firms to be placed at a competitive disadvantage to those in the Republic of Ireland where there are not similar labour market constraints.'
This shouldn't come as a surprise as the original 'two sides of A4' Brexit document from the NI Executive had continuing access to lower skilled labour as a policy objective.

Kurt Hübner the academic who produced a report on the economic impacts of a united Ireland in 2015 is launching an updated version today.
The 2015 version basically said unification would boost the economies on both parts of the Ireland, particularly NI.
It is fair to say there is not a consensus view on economic impacts of reunification. The optimistic case is that it unleashes productivity gains which would allow a 32 County state to absorb the cost of NI’s Westminster subvention.

Compelling evidence from hauliers at the always-exciting Lords EU Internal Market Sub-Committee. FTA say say officials at Dept of Transport of doing a 'valiant' job but relation are 'tense & difficult'
That's because those officials realise that in event of no deal 'the plans they are preparing would probably not make a significant difference to the almost virtual collapse of trade across the channel' because of unavailability of permits.
'The critical path in this has been trying to persuade ministers of the reality of that scenario.'

As a thought experiment, and given how gloomy we're all feeling about where we are in Brexit, let's try to think of a solution that might work for all in the UK, and the EU - even if from here it is hard to see this being negotiable 1/
Start with the future economic relationship, one of the main problems here has always been that the timescales given are unrealistic - so let's make them more realistic and target a 2022 agreement, implementation 2024 2/
Next, given negotiations will take this long, the transition period should be extendable to cover it, so that we do not face the risk of separate transition peruiod, backstop, then new arrangement 3/

He said it will lead to regulatory controls in Irish Sea, 'serious & visible frictions' with EU and 'no security co-operation provided for'

Robbins:

'We should not forget that the backstop world, even with a UK-EU customs union, is a bad outcome with regulatory controls needed somewhere between GB and NI, serious and visible frictions and process between GB and the EU, and no security co-operation provided for'
Robbins also warned UK has no legal means of breaking off from backstop.

While both sides are required to make 'best endeavours' - acting in good faith - to a deal, this does not place EU under any legal 'obligation'

He effectively said there is no guarantee we can get out.

A good thread by @pmdfoster and @paulrey99 but I believe both miss an important point. It's not just about "they don't want to make it work". It's possibly also that making it work would not be legitimate.
To explain that: The border question is about identity and ideology, something what Brexiters should know all to well.
Fact is, The solutions discussed, even if they work on a technical level at one point in the future, mean more visibility of a border. Not just in form of cameras but also in peoples' minds. The border will be perceived as more apparent. And this opens a can of worms.

The Protocol is intended as ‘insurance’ in case a future UK-EU agreement is insufficient to meet the commitments made in the Joint Report bit.ly/2Bgjvj6. In that sense it is *already* conditional & envisaged as temporary.
It is a backstop, not a precursor.

The Protocol is the EU showing most flexibility (cherrypicking) *for* Northern Ireland in the very areas that the UK is finding hard to swallow, i.e. NI being in a Common Regulatory Area and the Customs Territory of the EU.
