#OnMagnitudeBasedInference

I don’t know enough about statistics to decide if the approach is appropriate or not...

And neither do you.
But that is OK.
In order to make a judgment on this you need a deep understanding of statistics and the philosophy of science.
Almost all sports scientists don’t have this.
Those people who do take a position in the debate should recognise that they do so because they trust someone else’s opinion. That is entirely fine too.
However being able to regurgitate your authority’s arguments does not mean you understand why they have more weight than the other side’s.
Personally I could probably take an informed position if I wanted to. I have a first class degree in maths and have thought quite a lot about philosophy of science.
However it would require a very large amount of time, which I am not willing to invest.
This is because I think the debate kind of misses the point. I have some sympathy for the criticism levelled at traditional approaches by advocates of MBI. However I don’t think their solution solves the problems.
Anyhoo, I find it a bit weird that people get that passionate about what statistical test to use. 🧐
