#OnPrecisionInTheUseOfMechanicalTerms

There is a lot of overlap between everyday language and technical mechanical terminology. This can lead to a lot of confusion when talking about movement.
It is very common for coaches to use language incorrectly when talking about mechanics. For instance, I talked about the misuse of the term "power" in a separate thread.
To be clear, in this thread I am not criticising coaches for this. In many cases it is to a large part harmless - yes from a strict mechanical perspective the wrong word is being used, but coaches and athletes have a mutual understanding of what they mean.
However, there are some instances where misuse of mechanical terms can be harmful...
Category 1: People who should know better
An analogy:

You know how you can tell if someone hasn’t spent much time in a weight room as soon as they touch the bar...

Imprecison in the use of mechanical terms is exactly the same type of “tell” about someone’s mechanical knowledge.
People who teach or publish biomechanics should never make these mistakes. Part of understanding is knowing why this is important.
Imprecisión does not simplify, it just contributes to confusion and misunderstanding.
Category 2: people with incomplete understanding of mechanics.

Category 3: misappropriation of mechanical terms to claim legitimacy for your own invented concepts.
