Question time: the field that you work in now, were you always good at it? Did it come easily to you in school? Did you even know you wanted to work in this field when you were younger?
I'm a physics lecturer now, but physics was actually my worst subject in school. I was good at the math side of it but struggled, a lot, with the concepts.
I nearly failed physics in high school, and even in college (where I double majored physics/math) it was my grades in other subjects that propped up my physics grades. I studied really hard! But just found it quite a challenge.
But I also think physics is fascinating, and I wanted to understand the world a little bit better, and I also had a slight chip on my shoulder. So I stuck with it.
I love physics, but even getting into a PhD program was hard for me, in the US system. I had to take a year off, retake a couple things, work in a research lab. And ask myself what I really wanted!
But it seemed really worth it to me, and I have really enjoyed the research I've done since then. Plus I have found connections between physics and writing, comedy, dance, etc that I never even knew existed!
