Who else thinks a “cybersecurity moonshot” is a horrible way to think about security? Getting safely to the moon and back, before 1970, was a discrete goal, against the laws of physics and nature. “Cybersecurity” is a never-ending process vs an intelligent, adaptive adversary.
Here is the technology part of the “moonshot.” It’s all forward-looking “next gen” stuff (5G for security, really?) rather than the basic blocking & tackling we still haven’t figured out. I was on the NSTAC staff with @FireEye and couldn’t have been happier when my time was done.
Trying to not be a hater here. NSTAC can write to their heart’s content, so long as they don’t promote policies that waste my taxpayer dollars. I thought we had killed the “security as a final destination” model when @schneierblog popularized security as a process, not a product.
I love love love the fact we went to the moon. I detest the deformed philosophies it spawned, like “we can send people to the moon, why can’t we end poverty?” The same is true of the Manhattan Project theme — every tough problem requires a “Manhattan Project” level effort. Nope.
