Hello from the Federalist Society's annual convention dinner, coming to you live from the moderately unstable platform where they've put press. The evening will feature a talk by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and former White House counsel Don McGahn
Justice Brett Kavanaugh is at tonight's Federalist Society convention dinner, he just received a lengthy, enthusiastic standing ovation when he was introduced
Also in attendance: former attorney general Jeff Sessions, who also received cheers and a standing ovation (not as long as Kavanaugh's)

Kavanaugh just got announced again as they finish up dinner and move into the evening's program, getting another big standing ovation. If you're wondering, "What is the Federalist Society and why does this matter," we've got you covered: buzzfeednews.com/article/zoetil…
Here is former White House counsel Don McGahn with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. McGahn notes the evolution of the Fed Soc dinner -- question used to be, will any cabinet members or judges or justices show up; now the question is, how many
McGahn asks McConnell where his focus on judges came from. McConnell talks about the history of filibustering judges, blames Dems for doing it during W. Bush. McConnell says Dems feared "crazy right-wingers" — smattering of chuckles + applause — "some of them are in the audience"
McGahn talks about the genesis of Trump's campaign-era list of SCOTUS nominees, says that during a brainstorming with him and Leonard Leo and others about possible nominees, Trump pitched making it public. McGahn says he was surprised and thought, "Game on"
With Kavanaugh looking on from his table near the front, McConnell and McGahn talk about the political wrangling behind the scenes leading up to his confirmation. McConnell praises Sen. Susan Collins, who ended up being the deciding vote to confirm, the room applauds
