The Total overhaul of Water Works in major towns (Minna, Bida, Kontagora, and Sul.) by the Admin. of Governor Abubakar Sani Bello means removing and replacing every single detailed engineering works with the latest technology in waterworks engineering.

All the equipment have been manufactured to specifics by world leaders in water & sewage engineering firm, The KSB France & Germany. The equipment is tested, shipped to Nigeria & to Minna before being moved to locations (Chanchaga, Bida, Kontagora & Suleja).

Installation work is the most critical, you have to precast concrete platforms for pumps and electrical components. #ProjectsMonitoring
The administration had to build a completely new 133kva dedicated lines, install various capacity transformers, import 2000kva and 1000kva Cummings standby generator from the UK, shipped to Nigeria and to Minna, then move to 4 locations.

After all of that, you move to the next stage of the total overhaul, which is reticulation, using new urban design architecture with a sustainability framework.

So the waterworks project started by Governor Abubakar Sani Bello is a work in progress.

The DG of @NigerPMD, Mallam @LafiyaS has been actively involved in every stage of this overhaul, from the purchase to installation of pumps. With a clear directive from Mr Governor About how important and how swift he wants the project to be executed. #ProjectMonitoring

This is a good deal.

But it does show how the economics of newspapers have changed dramatically.

This deal works out at about 17 cents an edition for digital access.

The cover price for a physical Indo or Irish Times is €2.20, thirteen times more expensive.
When newspaper sales starting falling it wasn’t actually that fewer people were buying them.

It was that they were buying them less often, known as Frequency of Sale.

Monday editions were particularly interesting. It used to be a very big sale day.
But men between 22 and 40 who were big in to sport were amongst the first to migrate online to places like Football365 and elsewhere.

Other sports fans followed. Now Monday is usually the worst sale day of the week. By some distance. (I haven’t checked the breakdown recently)

1. Even anti-nuclear governments are turning to nuclear power to deal with a record-breaking heatwave, which has increased demand for electricity to power air conditioning around the world.
2. To meet rising electricity demand, South Korea’s anti-nuclear government announced last week that it would increase the number of operating nuclear reactors from 14 to 19, even re-starting two reactors that were scheduled to be closed.
3. Anti-nuclear Germany has had to rely heavily on its remaining nuclear plants and its coal plants even during daylight hours, when Germany’s solar panels are at maximum production. The reason? Very little wind.

So, following my earlier tweets about HSR & ECRL, a question that every rail industry worker would have heard at some point - why does KTMB use meter gauge, and can we convert to standard gauge?
As I touched before, the meter track gauge we're using is a relic of our colonial past.

I use the term "meter track gauge"above as there are other gauges referring to the dimensional limits of the physical load a train can carry, called the loading gauge & structure gauge
So when I use the term gauge prefixed with something other than those two, take it to mean the distance between the inner faces of the running rails

Some common track gauges

Meter gauge = 1,000mm
Cape gauge = 1,067mm
Standard gauge = 1,435mm
Broad gauge = 1,676mm

1. Plastic bags are actually pretty amazing technology. They cost a couple cents, can hold 1000x their own weight, are durable, and fully recyclable. I grew up with the supermarket freebies, and I love 'em.
2. Counterintuitive fact of the day: Plastic bags are way more efficient to produce than paper or cotton. Like, several hundred times more efficient, especially when reused as a bin liner/storage (‘single use’ is a misnomer). This is from the UK govt review:
