Also curious as to how race will play into this, given that the attacker dubbed here "the murderous terrorist" was a Somali Australian who identified as Muslim, while "trolley man" is White.

Please understand I am in no way equating Blackness with criminality.

We live in a society where Willie Horton tropes thrive & Black & Brown people make up the overwhelming number of people in prison so that was why I made the correlation.
And unfortunately the study did not consider race as a variable.

When judges set bail on my clients’ cases as low as $500, 87% of them cannot afford to pay it. That’s for offenses like trespassing & petit larceny.

It costs NYC, $475 a night to detain someone on Rikers’ Island.

You do the math.

When I started as a public defender, I thought judges set bail at $500 honestly - if mistakenly - believing that it was a token amount most people could pay.

Then I smartened up. Judges know exactly what we do: that $500 bail will hold poor people in jail & coerce pleas.
Until NYC and other cities do something about cash bail, please donate to bail funds across the country like @BKBailFund. $500 will buy a person’a freedom. A donation of $5 from 100 people gets us to $500.

(1) One person is dead after an active shooter incident at the University of Utah tonight. The suspect is a registered sex offender. He has left the campus area but appears to still be at large.

(2) Police have released a 2018 photo of the 37yo suspect to aid in the search. He has a long history of protective orders against him, and the 19 year old female student found dead tonight had reportedly been in a relationship with him.

(3) The suspect was later found by Police, deceased. The student he killed was 21 year old Lauren McCluskey, from Washington.

brazil has run-off voting & bolsonaro (whom i'll refer to as the fascist) did not reach 51%,so not ALL hope is lost. between the 1st round of the general election on sunday (which also was for senate, house, and governor) and the 2nd round, candidates have 3 weeks to campaign.+
the remaining candidates for the 2nd round of the presidential election are the fascist (whose problems i have gone into ad nauseum on this site & written about elsewhere and you can go searching for later) and fernando haddad, who represents PT (workers' party)+

Today I’m working the dreaded “double.” I will be in arraignments from now through 1am. Meeting people arrested within last 24-48 hours, arguing for release, working to advise traumatized families on what’s next, individualizing my clients beyond the accusation & criminal record.
2 for 2. When I met with both of my first clients & the conversation turned to bail, the question was rhetorical: “If bail is set, do you or any family have any money?” Their answers, as usual, is inevitable: “I don’t have no money. Not even a dollar.”
About to appear on case where prosecution is asking for $75,000 bail on a case where I believe-strongly-my client is innocent. A serious allegation but transparently false. Allegations of punch to face & strangulation w/ zero injury. Heart beating fast. Don’t want Rikers for him.
