As the modern media business model tries to find its footing, what if it doubled down on creating communities around niche interests? E.g. instead of blasting content to people and creating a garbage fire comments section, create actual digital and IRL communities
There's clearly a gap to be filled for people wanting to meet others of similar interests. There's also a gap to be filled with creating digital friends and turning them to IRL friends. I'm not totally sure how the business would work beyond events, but idk something there
There's so much conversation about pieces and engagement between people that happens in the real world and online OUTSIDE of the gates of the actual media organization, how can new media orgs capture that and turn it into something valuable?
This is happening in some places in the subscription universe
I wonder what alternative models there are to monetizing a community. What about conducting surveys + selling the data? Or if you have a targeted nice, conducting focus groups?
