With news today of Sweden’s ban on #Huawei #5G, we are updating the status map we’ve kept going for over two years.

Sweden goes full ban blue. Image
For those that might be wondering why the UK is still shown as red, the ban is not yet in place in the UK as the telecom bill hasn’t yet been presented to parliament, needs to go through second reading, committee stage, 3rd reading, Lords, then to Royal Assent.
I also remain on guard as I suspect that if U.S. sanctions banning component supplies to Huawei were to change for any reason, I think that’ll be taken as a cue by the carriers, backed by a parallel policy from Beijing, to try to reverse that almost but not quite yet a ban, ban.

1/ Sweden's post & telecoms authority has announced that #Huawei will be excluded from the 5G network. This includes essentially the entire network, including radio access (RAN). This is the most open and most far-reaching option Sweden could have chosen. shorturl.at/cqELX
2/ Not only Huawei, also ZTE products cannot be used. When ZTE/Huawei is used in the existing infrastructure relevant for the frequency bands made available for 5G, such equiptment needs to be replaced by 1 January 2025, the authorities announce.
3/ Until 1 January 2025, operators have to make sure all central functions are located in Sweden and depend on Swedish personnel only. The decision is based on a law that was adopted last year and came into force on 1 January 2020. It allows the security services the exclusion.

Great article on how #ByteDance's #tiktok algorithms made it such a success in #China; mainly because in #China, AI algorithms have been applied at scale to entertainment. With AI, the more inputs you have, the better and more accurate the algorithm becomes.
2/ #Tiktok would not likely be as effective in the US because the market is smaller (fewer inputs) than in China. This means that the algorithms could not be optimized as it has with #Douyin in China. In the US, algorithm optimization at #Microsoft, #Google, #Facebook, #Apple
3/ is a much slower and better documented process. With #facebook, it monetized advertising mainly through small ads and political ads targeting extremist subcultures and conspiracy groups, which adds to social fracturing in the US. #Facebook makes money from US collapse.

Breaking down some of the dynamics of how information gets laundered, note that the New Yorker tweet was a “promoted” Tweet. So Twitter is directly or indirectly making money off of #Huawei in addition to WIRED (and maybe the New Yorker?).

New Delhi is unlikely to formally ban Huawei or other Chinese equipment firms in case it provokes a tough response from Beijing, a government official said

India’s telecoms department has already prohibited 5G testing with Chinese vendors and the administration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is very wary about Chinese investment in sensitive infrastructure, according to the report.
However, India is unlikely to formally ban Huawei or other Chinese equipment firms in case it provokes a tough response from Beijing, the FT report quoted a senior govt official as saying, adding that the thinking of the government was “Let’s do tough rather than talk tough.”

Q: On UK's moves on BNO, Huawei&Hong Kong, what counter-measures will China take?
A: The UK Government, in disregard of China's solemn representations, is bent on carrying out political manipulation on the issues of BNO and the extradition treaty with Hong Kong. Image
A: The Chinese side strongly opposes such acts of the UK side which openly go against its own pledge, violate international law and the basic norms governing international relations, and blatantly interfere in Hong Kong affairs, which are internal affairs of China.

Experts say that’s a bad idea, but all governments should have rules in place to protect users. thestar.com/news/canada/20… #cdnpoli @TorontoStar
