Hey, so every year I do end-of-the-year links to pieces that were really great, and hopefully you find something you really like that maybe missed!
Because there are like... 50+ links (I keep... a google doc now?), I'm going to do a couple each day until about Christmas in one big thread
Let's start with the guys who tape Donald Trump's papers back together. “We got Scotch tape, the clear kind." politi.co/2y1fcqX
“Her ambition, she once told a reporter, was ‘to be the very best, like no one ever was.’ After a beat... she explained: ‘I’m sorry; that’s the Pokémon theme song. But, yeah, to be the very best, and go as far as I can go.’” nyti.ms/2SmFh90
“When I’m gone, I hope this new person will continue taking care of the old people.”

This is REALLY lovely and warmly sad about the way neighborhoods change, growing up, and immigration.

More links... This is really interesting on age, athleticism, experience, and the body's performance at ages 23, 26, 30, 35, and 38 es.pn/2KGztrG
"2018’s hottest show debuted in 1994. It’s called ER, and it’s awesome."
vox.com/culture/2018/2…
More interesting stuff about ER, episodic/ensemble storytelling, and Carter and Benton uproxx.com/sepinwall/er-p…
“I said to Mimi, ‘When I have a drink, that’s my moment when I turn off. It’s my time.’ And she said, ‘You’re still the fucking mayor!’ I had never thought of that.” bit.ly/2D9iJW2
The Oklahoma City Thunder’s biggest fan lives in Japan wsj.com/articles/the-o…
“'I grew up in the countryside,' she said. 'I’ve never really had a community that I belonged in. I was just a weird person—always, always.' Then she found other NBA fans online. She no longer felt alone. 'It’s just a bunch of weird people like myself.'" wsj.com/articles/the-o…
“‘I guess I get it. Forlini’s is so unhip it’s now become hip to them.’ She cast a glance at the rustic landscapes hanging on walls. ‘Look, I love Forlini’s, but if someone proposed to me here, I’d probably kill them.’” nyti.ms/2On9Yto
Let’s do some more end of the year links...

Wow! This Woman Doubled Down on an Ill-Conceived Tweet Until It Became Her Entire Worldview bit.ly/2A1Bp5U
“None of which will matter, because the habit we’re in of waging small-scale wars via celebrity censures has made us nearly incapable of really holding our allies accountable or of really forgiving our enemies.” wapo.st/2sPlCEL
We’ve all read this, of course, but still nytimes.com/2018/07/25/mag…
These letters after Anthony Bourdain died are really worth reading (there are many more than these screencaps) cnn.com/interactive/20…
More links! This is my fav, like dying laughing, it's ridiculous Onion story of the year
theonion.com/cows-trample-d…
Everyone's read this, too, but this is an excellent piece with the lingering, surrealist mental image of the year nymag.com/intelligencer/…
“On weeknights, I’d come home exhausted and put (Robyn's) 'Honey' on in the shower, and then the inside of my body would flood with confetti and warmth and electricity, and I’d stay up until three in the morning.” bit.ly/2zyDVRW
And, if you have not read this piece on how Larry Nassar got away with it for so long, how he deceived people, how people deceived themselves, it's really horrifying but revealing (with some darkly funny parts) bit.ly/2OFQgIr
More links...

On the hard times in Manhattan's flower district... “New York is the only one for me. If the market moves away, I’ll stay here and continue working with flowers.”

bloomberg.com/news/features/…
On Justin Timberlake / pop-ups / merch newyorker.com/culture/on-and…
“Then, as now, fraternities provided a big white ass pressed against the glass windows of campus feminism, and in a sense the two are dependent on each other for their ongoing vitality.”
theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
And this is just great, about refugees cooking Thanksgiving dinner for the first time and dealing with the loss/successes/trials of all that their refugee status entails nytimes.com/2018/11/13/din…
Some more links...

The Intellectual We Deserve (an actual examination of Jordan Peterson's work)
currentaffairs.org/2018/03/the-in…
"This is so pleasing—and life so arduous—that nearly forty million Americans currently smoke, despite knowing that it may give them lung cancer." newyorker.com/magazine/2018/…
"This summer of the romantic comedy... has been a relief—we’re grateful to be reminded of what we like about love, even when we hate it." Great read on why some romantic comedies (particularly this year's) actually work. theringer.com/movies/2018/9/…
